Rental home status Season- OWNERS STORAGE ROBBED

I have no trouble with owners putting in a camera on their secured storage. I dont like my things touched at my home either. One thing I found odd in one of our rentals was the amount of items stacked and stored in the bedroom closets. not advertised to use so we left it all be.. a lot of holiday decorations. table services. knic knacs. Im sure its done because of space but yes we could have raided the place if we were thieves.

Made our September trip to the beach home after the busy Rental Season. Overall mostly minor things as expected(missing utensils, coasters, furniture moved etc). Then we discover items missing from our Owners closet!!!! Someone picked the deadbolt lock and manage to relock it enough that maids or other guest wouldn't notice. For some reason they took, toiletries, makeup, laundry basket. In addition they stole a bottle couple bottles of wine, bottle of bourbon, Drill, Socket set and some other tools. They left all the beach stuff, fishing rods, wet suit, fins beach chairs, balls etc. Then we noticed they took our dog water and food bowls and stands. Everything replaceble but just frustrating and made for a horrible start to the trip.

Dam that sucks!

Same thing happened to a friend of mine who has a rental in OC. He did two things, one was put on a electronic lock. He also put a Ring camera in the inside of the closets. The closet has a power outlet so he was able to use that for the camera. He did this for two closets, one large one has a lot of their own personal stuff in it. The smaller one has everything for the cleaning crew.

Finally made it down to check on our house and do maintenance Our owner's closet was broken into as well. There are marks by the hinges so I assume that is how they got in. Our hinges are like the one's Tim posted. They took beach chairs, umbrellas, towels, and other daily items we store like aluminum foils, etc.. The closet was mess. Nothing major, but it pisses me off that someone decides to go to the length to take hinges off the doors to get into a locked closet. The 5 beach chairs we leave for guests are also gone (just bought them in May). I am going to look into secure hinges and a camera inside the closet. We have rented since 2010 and this is the first time this has happened.

It's a shame that you have to install a number of safeguards to keep personal belongings safe, but that's what it takes nowadays. Hire an electrician to install an outlet for a camera to catch the burglars in action and replace the hinges with a non-removable hinge pin type.

I don’t get it, but then again I don't own a black hoodie either...

Does the company renting your house have a copy of the key? Could be staff or vendors. I’ve seen it happen in the past.

I recall about 6 years ago many homes managed by the same company were found broken into after the season was over. The houses all had the electronic locks and the police found a cleaner using her personal code to get in any house that company managed. She obviously was not the sharpest tool in the shed it happens doesn't it.

Definitely happens! Also, our maintenance techs would somehow go into a house for basic maintenance things like changing smoke alarm batteries, filters, etc., and find a cleaner and her whole family staying in someone’s home without the owner’s permission. They’d drive here from inland, and just set up camp in the house. This happens frequently, actually.

We actually lost a really great, understanding owner once over this very thing. The cleaner was staying in his house while the house was empty, but he had a video camera on the back deck and saw her and her kids hanging out in his hot tub. He said he probably would have allowed her to stay there if she’d just asked; however, he rightfully felt this was a violation. Techs have reported it, but nothing is ever done, because they can’t ever find enough cleaners.

I'm sorry for those who have had this happen. My husband & I now own a home in Colington but for nearly 20 years we rented every summer and we never, NEVER, destroyed property, stole glasses, broke into locked owner's closets, etc. There are good renters albeit not all sadly. People can really suck sometimes.

It sucks, but is common and is something that you have to deal with if you are going to rent.
Get the tamper proof hinges and put a camera in the closet with the sign stating that there is a camera in the closet.

Or maybe just get the sign stating there is a camera in the closet? Big grin

In more then 30 years of renting twice we had unlocked owners closets when we checked in. The first was a pantry just full of liquor. I mean lots and lots of liquor. Called the rental company to report it and it took them 4 days to send someone with a key to secure it

The second was in a bedroom. Had a bifold door on a closet. This wasn’t locked but opening it revealed something of a hatch door to a built in unit in the closet. It was very weird and it had a deadbolt lock that was not secured. So, I took a look. Lots of serious adult entertainment gear. I mean real heavy duty stuff. Closed it up and was not sure if I should report it to the rental company. Hard to imagine the owner gave them a key to that. Try to contact the owner? That would be an interesting conversation. After some thought I did contact the rental company but insisted I needed to speak to management as I didn’t want to just drop this on someone. Just said there was a unsecured area of clearly personal nature and it may be something to contact the owner about. The next day someone came to the house and said they were there to secure a door and thanked me for reporting it. I don’t think they worked for the rental company but I didn’t ask anymore questions

Sucks!!! Sorry to hear happened to you as well. I am thinking of a camera in the closet, replace the hinges or might just put a barricade across the door with padlocks.

Thanks everyone for comments and suggestions. I put on security hinges and a new electronic Schlage lock. I plan on putting a camera inside next time down, probably the Blink camera that was suggested.
