Wade Sound Fishing/Paddle Boarding

Assuming that Hurricane Ian doesn't cause too big a disturbance in the OBX the coming week, the wife want's to try her iSUP in the sound and I figured I'd try some wade sound fishing while she cruises around. We will be staying in KDH all week. Any place close by that has good fishing opportunities and would be nice for paddle boarding? I'm thinking the Oregon Inlet is probably the furthest south we'd like to travel but hit me with what you got.

Also, any sound fishing advice is very much appreciated and welcome. I've only ever done surf fishing and that is just bottom fishing or tossing a spoon around.

Thanks all!

Oregon Inlet (the Fishing Center) is great for wade fishing, but not so much for paddle boarding. I’d look at Salvo Day Use area which is further south from Oregon Inlet, but only by 30 mins. If the wind cooperates it’s well setup for paddle boarding and there’s a lot for you to access wading. My dad and I have caught a lot of fish from there kayaking. There’s a public spot at the end of W Danube St in Nags Head that looks like it would be good for both, but maybe have a look for yourself before committing. It looked decent when I scoped it out for kayak fishing, but I’ve never tried it.

You can’t go wrong with an 1/8 to 1/4 oz jighead with a 4” Z-Man or similar soft plastic lure. I like paddle tail, but there are others. Let it hit bottom and bounce it back. A popping cork is good, too. Same jig setup as above, but suspended 18” or so beneath a cork. The tackle shops sell the cork you need.

Sounds like some good options thanks for your help! Only place we had in mind was the sound access parking lot behind jockeys ridge which is close to Danube Street so hopefully a good option. Salvo Day Use area looks nice, we may have to make the trip down.

Always wanted to fish Oregon Inlet, any info you can share about where exactly to fish? Using google maps Looks like I'd get in at the kayak launch ramp (Far South-East corner of the OI Fishing Center) and venture south along the bank? Doesn't look like there's access on the Coast Guard station side.

Thanks again for your help!

The Soundside Park or whatever it’s called there behind Jockey’s Ridge has some steps/dune to contend with. I’ve never fished there, but you should be able to paddle board no problem. I’ve only visited on foot and didn’t fish.

OIFC I’ve been to twice. Neither time was a success so I can’t offer you much. I fished up towards the north past Big Tim Island and onto Herring Shoal. There were a lot of kayak fisherfolks out there and those I spoke to had a slow day. It’s a good place to fish if they are biting. This passed spring saw a fair number of nice trout there on the fishing reports.
