Made me sad waking up to this on fb today. I’ve never stopped by the Futuro House — always meant to. Looked at it every time I drove by. Its presence will definitely be missed.

Oh gosh! Same here. We've never stopped to look either, but always looked at it driving by too. You're right, it will be missed!

This is sad news. My daughters always liked to stop and get pics, especially when the "alien" was there. I loved checking it out when I was a kid and it was on the other side of the road. Just another cool part of Hatteras that is gone! Sad indeed!

I can't tell what happened - it burnt down? What was it - I mean we all saw it but was it a shop or office?

It has been a lot of things in a lot of locations on Hatteras. Currently I guess you would call a piece of display art. My grandchildren always had to stop to check out what the owner had added since last time.

Last year when I stopped to look at it it was completely full of crap and trash.

When it was across at the Marina at Scotch bonnet it was a hot dog stand.
Sad to see the future house gone.

I guess some of the tiles came loose and she burned on re-entry. Good thing it was manned by crash test dummies...

Too bad it wasn't maintained in some way. I wonder if it was a "Futuro House"? We have two in southern NJ. One was purchased by a town and preserved (photo below). The "Futuro House" was conceived in 1968 as a “portable” ski chalet by Matti Suuronen, a pioneer in the processing of reinforced plastic for construction. Less than 100 of these alien-like Futuro Houses were built, and today they are located all over the world.

Yes, it was a Futuro House. It had been on the island since 1972. It was at one time, a residence, a newspaper office, and a hot dog stand. It became more of a showpiece after that, and a familiar popular tourist spot.

Thanks. We checked it out years ago when it was a residence. Never saw it as a news office or hot dog stand.

I totally agree, Robert. It's a shame it wasn't used elsewhere perhaps retrofitted as a bar or ice cream stand in a nice area. Just too unique to be wasted.

I recall going into the spaceship back in the 90s when it was a hot dog stand. You climbed up the ladder and inside was a dude standing behind a table with a hot dog roller on it. That was it, besides a few small snacks to buy with your dogs.
I think someone lived in there for a while in the not so distant past.

I was in the house when it was a private residence for a party. The acoustics were crazy you could hear people across the room like they were standing right next to you. Made for an interesting evening. Really sad to see that go. It arrived in Hatteras the same year I was born here. Sad smiley . I don't think it had power hooked up to it so I am curious what the cause will be of the fire.

That is great history on this, Firebird! So cool! My husband and I are guessing that maybe the owner put in Halloween lights???? Don't know the electric source.....who knows. Maybe some mean people that wanted to do harm.
My 30 year old son and his fishing buddies were down here last week and couple of the guys had never been to HI and thought the "spaceship " was great. On our ride down here today he called us and said that he saw it on FB and all the fishing buddies were bummed by the fire. It is such a waste and I hate it for this village. I am so glad that you were able to spend some time in it!

Thanks to Lowtide for his links to history of these futuro homes. Nice reading!

When my kids went to check it out in July, they saw lots of cats around. Sent the kids the article yesterday and they all want to know if the cats will be ok. Anyone know if this is a known colony that is being cared for?
