The Weeping Radish (and the little stores between it and the Christmas Shop)
The Croatan (where my hubby and I ate our first meal together on our honeymoon in 1979)
Dowdy’s Amusement Park (where we loved riding the (as my dad called it) “wheel of death” lol

Does anyone remember Daniels’s seafood on the right side of the causeway heading to Manteo? I think it was torn down to make way for the WB bridge. My dad loved going there to watch them picking crabs. Then he’d buy a big container for mom to make Crab Imperial.

Thanks for posting this. That is the best trip down memory lane I have had in years. I have fond memories of almost all the places shown. One comment though; no mention was given that the top pic of Sound Side Folk and Ale House was actually when it was still the Holiday Marina. The place was opened and run in the early sixties by Bill Wilkerson who was the basketball coach at Knapp High School in Currituck County. In the first year they had only Holiday Prams for rent for a dollar an hour. They were big enough for one kid and maxed out at about one knot.

Also, I recognized two of the waiters st the Seafare. My guess is that the year was 1964.

Also the Foosball Palace/Atlantis had been the Nags Head Recreation Center long before. It was owned by Mr. Gaston Mann of Manns Harbor. Mr. Mann later became our first neighbor on what is now Bay Drive.

At one time, I had some vintage postcards of the Sea Oatel. They should be around the house somewhere.....I just loved the name! Very catchy.

We have memories brought up from this post of the old Frisco pier back in 1989 when my daughter was 18 months old. Her first trip to the OBX. Gotta dig up those old pics from the pier and look at them. We visited some gift shop in Frisco and she picked out a stuffed cat that was named Frisco. It became THE toy for a few years. I enjoyed reading about the pier history from NCSUs post.

I’m 99.9% sure Soundside and Holiday Marina got a nice mention. Blast from the past! Mex-Econo, Seafare, Papagayo, Atlantis, ARBG, The Galleon, etc.

I am 99.9252 % sure that I did not mean to imply that either one did not get a nice mention. I am an old man and that was my childhood neighborhood. So I just thought I might add something to the unofficial history, or what the history center calls oral history.

Well moving past getting my foot sliced on the Waterslide...the 2 restaurants I miss the most are THE QUEEN ANNES REVENGE and THE FISHERMANS WHARF both in Wanchese. We liked Wanchese when the tourists had never heard of it much. lol. I wanted my daughter to get married at the Gardens in Manteo then have the dinner at THE QUEEN ANNES REVENGE. There was a story behind the restaurant and us. this was back in the day when you basically trusted people. My daughter was 2 yrs old and had curls like Shirley Temple naturally. I dressed her to the teeth as my mother expected while out to dinner. Well she was a hit at the restaurant and was passed around like a sack of potatoes lol. The owners even said to let the baby see the horses next door. My granddaughter is also a living doll baby in public. Somewhere people have photos of the little Shirley Temple baby from the restaurant. too bad no one from Hollywood was there that night!

Yes, Awful Arthur’s. I’m just going by memory alone but I believe that the building started out as Shug’s Pancake House. Shug York was one of the first mayors of the town of Kill Devil Hills.

I remember you posting a picture in your waitstaff uniform wearing high water slacks. We started vacationing here in 1983 and moved here in 2004.

I bought my first surfboard from him at his Virginia Beach shop in 1963. It was a 9’6 Hobie.

The first time I ever saw a short board, his youngest son, Johnny had it in the lineup at the lighthouse. And there was an audience watching the amazing things he was doing on it.
