Any suggestions for a good up to date map online of the area that includes the stores and maybe even one with the traffic light intersections. I havent been around much since Hatteras and the truck ramps.

Whatever map is on my Android phone is a good map. I am not sure how many stores it shows since I have never used that.

Google maps and Apple Maps are both excellent. You have to zoom in close to see all the businesses in each program. Here is a good article on the alternatives.

I know this is really old fashioned but if you're a AAA member you can still get PAPER maps! They have a good one for the outer banks. As a retired pilot I love my gadgets, ie, GPS, Waze on my phone. But when I first start thinking of a trip there's nothing like spreading a good ole fashioned paper map out on the kitchen table!

i wish on beach road their were signs stating a light at intersections on 158 . This would be so much safer when making a left. i’ve seen at other tourist/beach areas.

A lighted intersection on the bypass will almost always have a painted crosswalk with a sign on the beach road. Certainly not all crosswalks have a light on the bypass, so ignore side roads when on the beach road that don't have a painted crosswalk marked.

And they usually have a pull over for making a left turn.

Actually, almost all the streets that intersect the beach road have a "TO RT 158" sign with an arrow if there's a stop light at the bypass.

This has been my experience as well. I'm sure some are lacking, but the major thru roads I normally take have this sign as you note and there is a stoplight. Most times my focus is on pedestrians and other dangers along the beach road that it doesn't matter how they mark these cross streets, I likely won't even notice.
