Can you grill on the beaches of KH/KDH/NH? And any other rules about it... We are used to grilling on the truck beaches on Hatteras. I know some houses come with a grill and some do not.

I am going off memory on this subject, it has been mentioned here before. Anyplace under NPS (Hatteras) is not what I am talking about. Southern Shores to Nags Head you can grill on the beach but there are some rules. It must be above the high tide line (seems sort of obvious) and the fire must be in a container of some sort. I assume like a small hibachi grill or like that and it must not be unattended.

This is a curious thing- on the NPS beaches in the Cape Hatteras Nat'l Seashore fires must be BELOW the high tide line, I guess so that the rising tide would kill any remaining embers.

Correct for bonfires. You can grill above the tide line with propane or charcoal in contained grills. I would stay away from the dune line as well depending on wind direction.

I used a little Weber gas grill on the beach in South Nags Head with no complaints from anyone. Beach patrol rolled by on their 4x4's smiling so they didn't care.

We love to grill on the beach...just a small charcoal one we take and cook burgers and dogs in Frisco...and before that in Avon. It is amazing seeing all of the massive grills folks bring down to ramps 48 and 49 during the summer. Big time BBQs going on and on and on.

. I know what you mean about the grills at the ramps. We rented a beach house that advertised a portable beach grill. They loaded it onto the truck. I was like "what are you doing?" "What do you mean you grill at the beach?" After that trip, I bought them their own portable one with a decent stand on or off. Nice! They use it a lot at home too instead of the fancy grill. I will look up the name next time I see it and post. it has lasted and cooks well.

But, with the erosion in some spots being what it is, during a king tide the high tide line/strong NE wind will sometimes put that line AT the dune line. Any of you that have dealt with a beach grass fire know how well and quickly the oils in the grass burn/spread.

Just be smart. Stop and Think.

I am in support of those that want to grill on the beach as long as they don't leave anything behind. It aggravates me to have to pick through Kingsford briquettes where someone dumped their grill on an otherwise pristine beach as I look for sea treasures....but what really annoys me is the blackened half burned firewood from a pointless beach bon-fire that someone temporally covered up only to be exposed with the tide change. I wish the NPS would not permit them. I apologize for my negativity. Cloud
