I just heard that Kill Devil Grill was recently sold. The new owner says nothing will change. $2 million is a lot for that place.

The place is always packed, even during the off season. And their specials are mostly gone by 8:00-8:30. The specials thing isn't good for the guests, but is good for the restaurant. And the John Yancy across the street is a continual source of customers.

They close down in the off season more than the average restaurant, And they've always been closed two days a week. If they can find help, there's certainly more opportunity for more trade. The biggest problem is probably parking.

Maybe the numbers work better if you price the business? I'm sure the buyers got to see the books.

I have always found that if you can find a place to park you can usually get a table soon. I don't think they need any more parking, maybe more tables or more space to add tables.

Over the years we've transitioned into almost exclusively cooking all our meals in the beach house, it's just so much easier than everyone having to take time to clean up after the beach and then caravanning to a restaurant and waiting for a table.

That said, KDG has always been one of our favorites, and was one of the few places we'd still venture out to annually.

The parking is a real headache, but the food and service were always excellent.

Not sure I have 100% confidence in an out-of-state ownership group, and a GM who is new to the area, being immediately successful in taking over an iconic spot, but time will tell...

Well said.
If they stick by the "we are not going to change much" philosophy they might be OK but I see a lot of chefs in that mix and as we all know too many chefs/managers/Chief Executive officers/operations managers always ruin the pie.

Am I the only one seeing a pattern here? One by one, the old school restaurant owners are bailing.

I live in the Philly Burbs too. Some places are closing. The owners, in many cases, retiring, or just can't weather the effects of the pandemic.

What's going on at the Outer Banks is different. A different feel.

A number of restaurants in Chestnut have closed, owners retiring. Out favorites were Rollers and The Flying Fish. Paul Roller just couldn't do it anymore at 30 years

That restaurant was originally "Millie's". The original Millie's is still open in Richmond, VA. They were a breakfast/lunch place. The signature dish was "The Devils Mess"!

It is a part of the restaurant world. My parents owned a family restaurant for 47 years. It is a HARD business and even harder today.
I would never recommend it for a career or a business.
