Never could grasp the 'commune' vacation plan ever since I spent a few of them in a house full of grads. All my beer gone, all my food gone, my bath towel already wet before I showered and somebody else in a drunken state beat me to my bed. Haha, it was fun back then but never again.

I prefer to gather my family under my supreme and unquestionable command and control. ...The problem is I fall asleep at 9pm. I hear stories of legendary parties ....I don't believe a word of it.

This will be the 4th year in a row we’ve rented a large house (6 bedrooms) for our kids and grands and us to spend the week together. So far so good. We keep everything loose and flexible.
No “got to’s” only “get to’s”
So come and go as you please.
Meals are optional (usually my sons will each take a night to make something gourmet)
MarMar and Pappy will babysit the grands one night so kids can go across the beach road to Fish Heads for a late dinner together. But that’s it!
The highlight of the week is the annual Beer Pong tournament. Last year MarMar and Pappy were the undisputed champs!!

This is why we go with immediate family only. Me and my only daughters family. 4 of us. My nephew use to go with a big group until someone backed out at the last minute and almost stopped the vacation they scrambled to pay the difference

Totally agree, Lolli. I rent a 4br house in the summer, sleeps 9. That's enough for my family and a very close friend or two. Anybody else is welcome to come during the day to park oceanside, eat, hang on the beach, go fishing but at the end of the day... we'll see you tomorrow.

I agree too, Lolly! Used to go with my mother, 5 sibs, their spouses, and a ton of grandkids. Crazy!

My husband and I would sneak away.....

Now, I will only do my kids, their spouses, and my grands. Much more manageable and i get to see my grandbabies!

There is a home near us that is huge and it almost looks as if it is split into two parts. I heard the story on that one and the owner supposedly put in a dividing wall and made another kitchen and bath and bedroom so that he and his wife could have everyone down and slip away to their private area when they were ready to get away from chaos.
Genius if what my neighbor told me is true!

I’m wondering what will happen this year. We’ve got the same house we had last year booked since last January (great place) for a week in October. Come to find out a couple of months ago that our youngest son Reece and his wife are expecting their first baby the same week! Then we just found out our son Ian has taken our two little granddaughters out of government school and enrolled them in private school (thank God). And his wife will be starting a new job. These two things may cause them to have to cancel their trip with us. (Don’t feel too sorry for them, they have a 2 week trip on Ocracoke booked in august). PLUS our daughter may be moving around then. Looks like it may just be hubby and me this year in a 6 bedroom!!
We have a third son, but they homeschool and are involved in a lot of things that time of year and their daughter starts college. They never come with us.
Could be a fun week for just MarMar and Pappy!

That's where close friends come in, Lolli. My son couldn't stay the whole week so we invited another couple who graciously accepted and enjoyed a few nights with us.

That’s what I’m thinking we might do if the family thing falls thru, Greg.
I have a cousin who lives in Annandale near DC whom I haven’t seen in years. I think he and his wife would be my top pick.

A boy. Which tips the scales in favor of the men.

Bent, I can even imagine having siblings and their families along…..on either side!!

This reminds me of Thanksgiving two years ago. My wife's entire family went in together to rent a house down on North Topsail for Thanksgiving. Thirteen people and three dogs in one house. Introvert hell... My daughter and I snuck out several times for looooong walks to escape.

My Daughter's in laws invited us to stay with them a few times. NOT A CHANCE!

Same week, separate houses is what we usually do.

Four people max. Five bedrooms minimum. Eight is preferable. If it doesn’t take you twenty minutes to find someone in your beach house, your beach house is too small.

No children. No exceptions.

This has been an Aliphatic Public Service Announcement.

You’re welcome.

Thanks for the APSA regarding Beach Vacations. Is this an addendum to your example of renting a sports car you can't afford to buy for the trip down? And what alcoholic concoction is best for forgetting about student loans? Thanks again for sharing your perspectives - the struggle is real!
