Happy birthday US Coast Guard

The US Coast Guard is 233 years old on Friday, August 4, and is actually older than the US Navy.

“The Coast Guard traced its roots to the small fleet of vessels maintained by the United States Department of the Treasury beginning in the 1790s to enforce tariffs (an important source of revenue for the new nation). Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton lobbied Congress to fund the construction of ten cutters, which it did on 4 August 1790 (now celebrated as the Coast Guard's official birthday). Until the re-establishment of the Navy in 1798, these "revenue cutters" were the only naval force of the early United States.”

Our family will never forget the tour we were given of the Coast Guard station at Oregon Inlet.
We just drove up and asked for a tour and we were graciously welcomed in. We were given a great tour including being taken aboard several of the vessels!
Our 11 year old son was gaga!
It was incredible!!!
I’m guessing that doesn’t happen anymore.

Was the tour pre 911? If so, a few protocols (even at station level) changed a bit.

But, might be worth a call smiley ! 252-441-6260 or post a question: Click to follow link...

I’m thinking it was pre 911 since they just let us right in no questions asked.
Which would have made my son about 10 not 11.
He was born Aug of 1991.

I’ve mentioned this before, but we also got a private tour of (what used to be Blackwater up in Moyock) around the same time.
I think we called ahead and they were happy to have us. That was really cool!!!

Getting onto Academi grounds today is a tad more involved.

Very cool stories!

Ha! Sea "stories" usually involve a certain amount of "darwinism" ("make stupid choices"....you know the rest). I will say my BILs seemingly cannot have an offshore experience with out USCG involvement to some degree :/
