Our neighborhood has warning lights at crosswalks. You push a button when you want to cross, it activates flashing lights to alert drivers and you cross. Sounds like something like this would be good for the Pea Island crosswalk.

I dunno...shifting sands/winter weather and all that kinda stuff make it challenging...the solution would literally have to be water/salt/wind/sand resistant beyond most systems capabilities. Just the cross walk "button" alone would be a huge challenge to keep "workable"

We have weather here too (rain, wind, snow, ice) and the warning system still functions. Like all mechanical systems, regularly scheduled maintenance goes a long way in keeping them operational. A small price to pay for safety for both pedestrians and motorists.

What is this thing called “regular scheduled maint?” smiley. Dude, we can’t even get the paint “right” on a bridge ( bad attempt at jug handle humor).

Your point is 100% valid (that it’s a small price to pay) but winters here are “different”…the winter overwash alone would be challenging.

I like the system used in the UK.
You put your foot on/into the edge of the painted crosswalk and WAIT for the cars to stop. Step down into the gutter on the paint stripe, etc. Wait. " Vehicles will need more time when the road is slippery."

www.gov.uk/guidance/the-highway-code/rules-for-pedestrians-1-to-35#:~:text=Wait%20until%20traffic%20has%20stopped,crossing%20(see%20Rule%20H2).

RULE 19

"Rule 19
Zebra crossings. Give traffic plenty of time to see you and to stop before you start to cross. Vehicles will need more time when the road is slippery. Wait until traffic has stopped from both directions or the road is clear before crossing. Remember that traffic does not have to stop until someone has moved onto the crossing. Drivers and riders should give way to pedestrians waiting to cross and MUST give way to pedestrians on a zebra crossing (see Rule H2). Keep looking both ways, and listening, in case a driver or rider has not seen you and attempts to overtake a vehicle that has stopped."

Saw an Incident yesterday in Kitty Hawk. What is the definition of IN? The Crosswalk Stripes start at the edge of the pavement. If you are STANDING ON THE STRIPES at the edge of the road, proceeding to cross, Is That In? A driver going probably over 40 MPH did not stop, but made an instant U Turn and came back to tell the people DO NOT STAND IN THE ROAD. The Driver argued IN is not necessarily IN unless you are away from the curb and walking across. What you say? I err on the side of Courtesy.

Anywhere on the pavement, including the shoulder. The law is there to keep cars from driving at speed around people who are still in the crosswalk. If they aren't on the road (pavement), then they technically aren't in the crosswalk and must wait.

Also, never wave anyone across, as it can be dangerous as you don't know what other drivers are doing and the pedestrians may not be as cautious as they should. Stop, acknowledge that you see them, and then wait until they cross

EDIT: Just realized this is an old thread Laughing smiley
