So, here I sit stranded at the end of Carova beach after barely making it back from the fire station to get my mail. Apparently the right middle cylinder decided to blow the spark plug threads, plug and coil pack all over the inside of my hood.....good times! Thumbs up Beer Beer Beer Beer Beer Beer Beer Beer Beer Beer Beer Beer Beer Beer Beer Beer Beer Beer Beer Beer Beer Beer Beer Beer and Martini Glass Martini Glass Martini Glass ...and I was going to make a much
needed grocery run tonight. Looks like I'm destined to attempt the dreaded Heli-coil repair protocols of insanity.

Toyotas should not do that. Sounds like a Heli-Coil fix is in order. It could have been worse. Car

Well of course my first thought was head gasket with all the oil and smoke. A closer look and it smelled more like a mixture of oil and gas. Looks like the boot for the valve cover came apart too hence the oil. This is what happens when you get lazy and let other people change your plugs. Somebody must have really cranked down on it for the threads to strip out that way.

No not at all. I try to keep the 80 off the beach. It's at my place in Hyde county. This environment is murder on machines. The 4runner is my beater. Even in Hyde County I keep a little Ford Focus to run errands. The 80 will get a full restore at some point but she runs great right now.

Salt away and fluid film are the ticket, but you prob know that. That and (I am so overdue) jacking and pulling all four corners, blasting w salt away and dousing w FF.

Not sure where your 4Runner was built, but the Araco built LC's just seem to have better rust protection.

The 80 is a 94 and the frame is FAR superior to the 4runner.

It's badged LC, but it's not. Looks to be a GX (Lexus) that has been "Toyota'd"

And...blasphemy, no split back (tail gate)

To me, if it doesn't have solid axels it's not really an LC.

True…but no more front knuckle repacks (a pita for us old effers). No solid front axle was a huge “give in” for me as well…I even kept my 80 for almost a year after moving to a 100.

But, I tell ya, the 100 pros do eventually outweigh the cons. Also just not enough “terrain” around here to fully really require/appreciate a front solid axle.

Having said, I’d really like (when I come back as a zillionaire) an LS powered 70 or even one of the monarch resto/mod defenders.

No, I get it. The 80 drives like a front end loader on the highway. ..But what kind of a place is the Highway for a Land Cruiser?? (;

Honestly,
Look for a 1FZ head complete. That repair doesn't last too long on those motors.

The problem is with the 4runner. I'd rather pull the motor and just put a new one in . I gotta get off the sand first regardless.

Ahhh the 5vz. I need to work on my reading comprehension.
Never done that repair on one of those but I will say change the timing belts on them every 90K . They are non interference valves so even if it lets go it won't hurt it but it is still a pain to deal with.

They recommend you change em every 30k but being "non destructive" noone does. when you do however, it's a good time to change the water pump and thermostat. Always go OEM on the waterpump.

That's what the Toyota dealership told me when I went to get the water pump. He said that driving on hot sand in a salt environment will dry it out fast....what am I a walking Toyota manual? lol I watch Youtube on the hood of my car.

This is from the Toyota parts center:
4Runner

"Owners of V6 4Runners from 1990 to 2002 will need to replace their timing belt every 60k, while owners of V8 engines from 2003 to 2009 need to think about a belt replacement every 90k miles."

This is a 2000 V6 so it's 60k... who knew?

I've done that job exactly 2 times and it sucked. Both times it was AT LEAST 90k in between belt changes. I've owned two 3rd Gen 4runners. One (a 96) had 325k and this one (a 2000) has 190k miles on it.

Apologies, just looked, you are 100% right on suggested maint on the 4Runner. That's crazy. Best guys for advice are, I think, the Toyota in Va Beach. They really know their 4WD sand stuff and were a HUGE player in the Tundra frame rust recall deal. The 5.7, FWIW, is chain smiley

What I've always found is that the old 120k belt and new belt looked pretty much (save the P/N markings/logo) the same...way over engineered, but totally fine by me.

Yeah there are plenty of people driving around with 200k on the original belt.

60K for a belt, that's nuts to have to do such a big job at that interval- I thought 90 or 100K was pretty normal for them. Right now all of our vehicles have chains, but after having a belt break one time many moons ago, and tear up a motor I was pretty meticulous about changing those things.
