We used to have small cottage in Sanderling and my husband’s family would rent a couple of houses nearby where in Hatteras would you recommend for good beach space for a group of people to gather. I was thinking of Avon? Open to all suggestions and rental companies. We did this for over thirty years and everyone gets along well. The grandchildren have children Thank you

Great question, but I don’t think you’ll find a “bad beach space” on Hatteras. Seriously….sound, ocean, or mid island, it’s all pretty unique and “close”.

Sanderling is very nice, Hatteras just has a little different ”vibe”.

Good luck w your planning, hope your trip is awesome!

Yes, Frisco is nice....any place but Hatteras Village would be a good choice. You don't want to experience the aggravation of riding bikes to the nearby grocery or walking the docks when the charter boats come in........ Whistle

Not a bad spot to choose from. We've never rented in Hatteras, but have stayed in Frisco, Buxton, and Avon. Avon will have more "stuff" ice cream shops, restaurants close by than Frisco. Buxton of course has the lighthouse, a couple of restaurants, ice cream, etrc., as well as Cape Point if you have a 4X4. As far as the beach is concerned, the beach in Frisco is a bit firmer than north of the point and typically the ocean depth is very gradual, it's shallow a long way out. The surf north of cape point tends to be a bit "heavier," and the sand a bit softer. We tend to go to the beaches that are north of the point. One more thing to think about is where you stay- soundfront or oceanfront? Do you prefer coffee watching the sunrise over the ocean or a pina colada watching the sun set over the sound? Obviously, oceanfront will be a little more expensive. If you have a 4X4 you can rent on the sound and drive onto whatever beach you want.

You didn't mention what time of the year. If in the summer there will be more people and the ocean will be good for swimming, but the fishing won't be as good. If you like to fish and don't like too many people April and October/November are awesome.

I have noticed this past summer that the ocean front on ramp 49 has a large shelf instead of the flat almost incline into the water as in summers past. Of course, it is just the changing tide doing its thing, but quite a difference. When we drive down the beach now, I cannot see the tide line due to the big drop off. Would love to see it change back to before and I'm sure it will eventually do so. And no tidal pools that I have seen this summer however I may have missed some since we're back and forth visiting. But you are right in that the waves are gentler in Frisco since it is south facing vs. Avon east facing with gigantic waves.

Thank you everyone! I was concerned about erosion. I knew Rodanthe had problems.

Mammoth problems smiley you really wanna stay away from that place ;) people are super sketchy, too ;)

There are really only a couple (maybe three) hot spots...much of the hullabaloo has been manufactured by a very recent midwest buyer that didn't do his homework. Psst, coastal erosion has been a thing, like forever.

One cool thing about this place (OBX connection) is that you can post a question about a cottage and invariably someone will be able to snap a pic for you. Also, if FB is your thing, there is a Rodanthe/Waves/Salvo sub site you can join and post question.

I love Rodanthe! Beautiful beaches and nice people! We used to stay there on ocean side in the 80s at a cool home owned by a gentleman who owned a large paint company in VA in our neck of the woods. Our forever treasured piece of driftwood was scooped up on that beach. Good times with great friends!

Attached is the gorgeous piece of driftwood hubby found on the beach in Rodanthe. We have it now in our sitting room in Frisco! It's the bomb! Huge piece and it is totally a statement piece. Only item on that wall!

Interesting- We were there a couple of months ago and don't remember a marked shelf. The beach is always changing though, just look at Cape Point and the way it goes back and forth.

You are right! Last winter and spring...very small incline. I'm sure it will right itself soon enough. I was kinda bummed this week as it is sooo packed with people and I was walking sideways along the steep-ish incline looking for shells and gave up. Too many people and we were there at high tide which could make it different as well. Did the boat today and cruised to the ferry area near the spoiler island and anchored in two feet of water and was able to walk to the island and pick up some fabulous shells. Made me happy...made hubby happy since he was on his boat! Beautiful spot!
