Is this the same fire that Tim posted? The article says there were two fires.

One was this house and there was a friend of mine's house in Duck that caught fire last night.

A house fire in the middle of the night is one of my worst nightmares.
I can’t imagine the terror.
There are no words for such a tragedy.

That's just horrible and knowing the teens were probably so excited to be oceanfront and on the outer banks. We just had an entire family and a truck driver die in a rv and semi accident in Pa. 2 young people too and 1 was a pro rider Motorsports. A tire blew out on the rv and lost control.

Has there been a cause identified? My big fear when we’ve rented houses is working smoke detectors. We always bring one and a carbon monoxide detector as we’ve had too many years where we arrive and smoke detectors are broken or have no batteries, and the rental agency hasn’t treated it as important or urgent to get fixed.

This has been a tragedy, but it just took an even more serious turn for me personally. It turns out that one of the victims was a high school friend of mine. He lived in my neighborhood and gave several of us a ride to school every morning in his 1967 Firebird 442. The signal that Bill was here was the vroom, vroom of the motor with headers and glass pack mufflers. Some of you old timers would know that the car had to have an Edelbrock aluminum intake manifold with a Holley quadra-jet 750 carburetor. With the Hurst shifter it was a nice ride, and this is bringing back fond memories. Rest in peace my old friend Bill.

I talked to a friend Sunday who is involved in the SS fire Dept. They think it started in the South side of the house but that's all they know now. Sad.

Kdh is saying the cause is undetermined, but if that is true, then why did they tear it down the next day and destroy all the evidence? Hum

One Wavy report said a propane tank exploded outside.

I wonder why the occupants weren't all able to escape through doors and windows from a one story house on stilts, if they had working smoke detectors???

It was 2:30 in the morning, they probably were sleeping. Don't know about working SDer's, so many times they go off (cooking?) and people scramble to disable them. Then they never get working again.

Incredibly sad. I have to wonder if the unit had the required number of smoke detectors since the house was fully engulfed when they heard the detector go off. Also, curious if there was an easy escape route in case of fire. The last place I stayed at down there, which was on the beach, had a sheet of lattice nailed to the outside of the bedroom window. Still trying to figure out what the purpose of that was. Praying for strength for everybody involved. I don't know how you even start to process all of this.

Tim, do you know if CAMA will allow it to build back?

I didn’t like the shape of the house. Were those 2 wings that faced the road bedrooms?? I have a bedroom in my new house that I learned I don’t like because no easy exit after a power surge. Thinking about making it an office instead.
