I think they could use a few more advertisements on the obituary page there....

Not my boyfriend, but I appreciate your concern! Mine is Buddy Jennette; however, as with all of the natives, Buddy Burrus was one of my Buddy’s many cousins, and he knew him quite well.

P.S. My brother recently told me I was old for reading the obits, but I’ve been reading them since childhood. Ha! ;)

Yes, sad about Buddy Burrus. He wasn’t in good health. I’m sure you’re a young 68!

I have a 68 year old body, all original parts. My brain wants me to believe I'm 35. Nowadays I have recognized the need to reel in my thoughts. Like should I climb back on a skateboard after a 55 year hiatus. Should I learn how to surf knowing I am a really a poor swimmer.

Nah, don’t sell yourself short. While only you know your limits, you can build up to some of those things, if you want to try it. I know surfers here who are nearly 70. They may have been at it for years, but one was down for quite a while with an injury, and had to work at getting back at it. Skateboard, go for it. If you break every bone in your body, I’ll be deleting this post, though. smiley

Yep. I dont want to get political, and Buddy is a common nickname. The guy I enjoyed talking with a couple times had a place that people sometimes stop at. Just wondering if it was him who passed.

There will be no need to delete the post. My wife has already told me if I do anything stupid and get busted up she will just throw me overboard and let the crabs recycle me.

Sad, Buddy was a friend of a friend of ours. Got to hang out with him one night over some adult beverages. Would see him often over the years scooting around on his golf cart. Oden’s dock has lost a few local fixtures this year. RIP.

Sort of embarrassed to say I occasionally read the obits as well (65 in Oct). Must be something about mortality contemplation for us older types! All it does is motivate me to stay in shape and not sit around lamenting about never kiteboarding again due to the torn meniscus in my right knee. The weekly cardio/stretch/core healthy eating routine definitely takes a serious chunk of work, but I figure retirement time well spent. Just modified the play toys for less knee stress, Outer Banks style. As long as you can avoid the razor sharp foil under the board, the water makes for much softer crashing than terra firma Laughing smiley

I have a whole folder on my computer of obituaries I've copied. Just about the entire generation line represented by my parents is gone. A friend's mom in CT may be the last.

Another sign of getting old is the "Today's Birthdays" column in the newspaper.* Celebrities, musicians. entertainers, and so on. Below a certain age is, "who the hell are these people?"

* Newspaper is another sign of being old.

I follow your vids. Very impressive! I spent the whole week last week "surfing" with my 24 year old jock son. I was doing great until I tried to outlift my son unloading plywood from the truck for the roof and caught the edges on a tie-down and tried to he-man it free. Those days are over. My shoulder came out of it's socket and made a terrible ripping sound. I banged it up against a tree in a panic to get it back in and it actually worked... but the pain would wake you up in the morning boy, I swear to God. I iced it right away and took Advil but I was mostly sad because I could only watch from the water for the rest of the week. I think the salt water helped. Still, we had a good time.

I'm only 46, but reading obituaries is not uncommon for me. It's weird, but it really gives me perspective of how insignificant I am in the grand scheme of things. My job requires me to see/read unfortunate things that people face medically and that, along with seeing folks my age and often times younger passing, makes me grateful for the time I have.

Just read this and so glad all is well with your household!! So sorry for this man and his surviving family. I'm sure he lived a full life. I've been reading local obits for years. It's the last hurrah for everyone and many of the ones written are wonderful stories. The last stories.

Be careful, Professor! I do not want to read yours any time soon! 40 is a nightmare and we go that route!! Have a great time and catch a lot of fish as I'm sure you will.

Sorry to hear about the shoulder and being on injured reserve for those surfing sessions. Very familiar territory. It’s interesting how we have to back off from what we could easily do when we were younger, and yet still find ways to stay in the game. Your resilience and toughness will make you a great adapter, but then again living basically full time in Carova already proves that!

Interesting…..Do tell. I do a few standard knee “strength” exercises and it keeps me going quite well but things like running are a big no no. I just bike and swim instead. Even just pounding on the chop strapped into a kiteboard (let alone jumping) makes the knee angry. We refer to foil boarding as the “magic carpet ride”

One more thing about aging, obits, and contemplating mortality while trying to stay active. One on my role models on this topic (who most old timers will quickly recognize) is Jack Lalane. Amazing individual who walked the walk! Aside from accidents and really poor luck, you get to choose your aging destiny…..

Not really much to "tell"...you can build all the knee strength possible, but that tear (sometimes, totally staying off it, can heal) will continue to "catch" as your knee moves through through it's arc - you totally loose confidence in "it" (do you ever walk down/up stairs leading w that leg?).. Assuming it's just a meniscus tear, scoping so as to trim/suture/clean up, is a seriously fast/quick surgery. You'll be crutch walking within 24 hours. Happy to PM w any questions...I've been under the knife/scope a few times.

Yep, no more kiting for me, either, catching an edge (I'm riding up on 70) was becoming way too frequent and other previous "body work" was starting to scream back at me.

On Jack L - WOW! pulling what, 70 loaded boats across LA Harbor at 90? Incredible...but, check out what his diet was..not sure I could do that religiously. But, boy of boy, he (and Brady)...amazing.
