Yep...I'm old, but I do love Glen!!!! Gentle on My Mind and Galveston as well as others.(12,000 died there in 1900 due to the worst hurricane in history). Playing his tunes right now. Great man!
On the day the Galveston hurricane made landfall in Galveston, Wilbur Wright arrived in Elizabeth City on his first trip to Kitty Hawk. Elizabeth City was always the end of their land journey. A few days later, he caught a boat to Kitty Hawk.
“Saturday, September 8, 1900:
" Spent Saturday morning trying to find some spruce for spars of machine, but was unsuccessful. Finally I bought some white pine and had it sawed up at J.E. Ethridge Co. mill. Compston Goffigon, the foreman, very accommodating. The weather was nearly 100 Fahr. And I nearly collapsed. At 4:30 left for Eliz. City…."(Papers, pg. 24)
On Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, a Norfolk & Southern Railroad train departed Norfolk at 4:10 P.M. and arrived in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, at 6:00 P.M. Either Wilbur was a bit off on the time, or he took the next train.

Saturday, September 8 - Tuesday, September 11, 1900:

Living there was my great grandmother Pat who was seven months pregnant with my grandmother Lou. Perhaps Grandma Pat saw them. It was said that she liked watching the boats go by. She made the best cabbage in the whole world. And Grandma Lou made the best fried chicken.
