Our last boat...a huge twin engine sea cat was bought by a couple who lived in Cincinnati. They drove to Roanoke VA to pay for it to anchor it in Galveston TX. It was sold during the derecho that hit the eastern US that year and they were so excited. It was a pain during our black out that long week in VA.when they came to buy it. I was totally exhausted and hot. PiTA!!!!!! I always think of them when I think of Galveston as they have a home there and our old boat is there. We like the smaller one better!

Who? Lol, just kidding.
Galveston is one of my daughter's favorite places. Beach out front and bay out back. But it is very vulnerable to storms.

There are numerous documentaries on the Galveston hurricane, but this one I believe is the best. Anyone who has ever vowed that they would not leave the outer banks, no matter how strong the approaching storm should watch this. The reason so many people died was because they had no warning. But the weatherman should have known because of the size of the waves, as the storm approached.

I was not a big fan. Wichita Lineman was my favorite.

On the day the Galveston hurricane made landfall in Galveston, Wilbur Wright arrived in Elizabeth City on his first trip to Kitty Hawk. Elizabeth City was always the end of their land journey. A few days later, he caught a boat to Kitty Hawk.

“Saturday, September 8, 1900:

" Spent Saturday morning trying to find some spruce for spars of machine, but was unsuccessful. Finally I bought some white pine and had it sawed up at J.E. Ethridge Co. mill. Compston Goffigon, the foreman, very accommodating. The weather was nearly 100 Fahr. And I nearly collapsed. At 4:30 left for Eliz. City…."(Papers, pg. 24)

On Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, a Norfolk & Southern Railroad train departed Norfolk at 4:10 P.M. and arrived in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, at 6:00 P.M. Either Wilbur was a bit off on the time, or he took the next train.

Saturday, September 8 - Tuesday, September 11, 1900:

"At 4:30 left for Eliz. City and put up at Arlington [Hotel] where I spent several days waiting for a boat to Kitty Hawk. Nobody seemed to know anything about the place. At last on Tuesday I left." (Papers, pg. 24)”

As he approached the mouth of the Pasquotank River just before dark, off to the left, only a few hundred yards away was a clearly visible riverfront house in a tiny community called Texas in Camden County just to the west of Old Trap. Living there was my great grandmother Pat who was seven months pregnant with my grandmother Lou. Perhaps Grandma Pat saw them. It was said that she liked watching the boats go by. She made the best cabbage in the whole world. And Grandma Lou made the best fried chicken.

Thanks Bent. After spending almost 12 hours behind the wheel yesterday I somehow managed to wake before the sunrise this morning. But it was raining and cloudy, so I went back to bed. By the time I woke up for the second time I only had time for coffee & to shop at Red & White before football. I swear everyone else had the same idea. In a dozen years of visiting I’ve never seen the R&W so crowded-zero parking. I suspect the new location of The Dancing Turtle had a lot to do with that though.

Bent, I am older than you! Octogenarian. I loved Glen Campbell too. Probably “Gentle on my mind” was my favorite but loved them all. Also loved Johnny Hartford and his banjo playing . Thanks for rekindling good memories.

I saw someone recommended “ Issac’s Storm” to read about the Galveston hurricane. It’s one of the my favorite books, along with “ Boys in the Boat”
