Textured Walls?

Our last couple of rentals not only had textured ceilings but textured walls also. Is this a thing? or done to cover up a poor drywall installation? Last weeks home was 25 years old, the year before was only 10 years old.

It is (a thing). All of ours are (walls and ceiling)

Does hide weeping water marks a bit better...

Makes sense, this house had some water damage to the walls

Yeah...sigh...it's (water damage) kind of a thing around here..... smiley

And, believe it or not, it's a "local" art of sorts...very hard (for most) to match up...it's called, IIRC, "knock down texture"....some do it by dabbing a plastic/garbage bag - but i'm not 100% sure.

It is a thing - Orange Peel. And generally, on the ceiling after removal (scraping off) of popcorn ceilings.

It also makes it a pain in the butt to paint. You have to use the proper nap on your paint roller and even then it takes more coats than you care to do or you have to come behind and touch up a few spots with a brush. It's no so bad if you're just touching up, but a new color or painting after an extensive repair is a chore. We have it on every wall and the ceiling. I have no issues with the appearance, but when it needs to be repaired we call in a pro.

It' "knock down" and the best thing since sliced bread. Makes touch-up painting a breeze and never shows where you started and left off. Hides imperfections too.

a lot of new houses, ours included, are doing this. costs more to sand to have a smooth wall and ceiling.

It is a big thing here and has been since I got my 1st house in 1991. I was selling real estate in Virginia for 12 years and we never saw it on the walls. There is a big difference in "knock-down" and "pop-corn" ceilings. The biggest disadvantage in knock-down is you can add wall paper or boarders - but who uses either anymore? Rounded drywall corners was almost a thing here back then too.

It has to be faster than using smooth walls that show every imperfection.

Too me it doesn't hide much Lol. I could see a lot of tape lines, poor joint work, just a way to cover up poor work. I get it, if you don't have the skilled labor to make the walls look good this is the next best thing

That was a poor job. I just had my insides painted and all cracked drywall tape joints fixed. These guys did it and did an amazing job. It took 3 days.

We have some of that orange peel...or whatever it's called. The popcorn ceiling is gone though! Yay!

I do however, want to try the new peel and stick wallpaper on the master bath here in Frisco. I am a wallpaper person but hubby is not! I figured the peel and stick may not make him too mad since it's not a pain to remove when you get tired of it. I've been reading about it for awhile and I'm going for it. I think that wallpaper is making a comeback.

We have used peel and stick. Here's a few suggestions. Clean the walls, but without soap. No residue - just water and let dry. Slightly and very slightly overlap the wallpaper edges, and put some paste in the paste in the corners. First time, used soapy water and didn't remove enough so edges peeled, didn't overlap - (i'll blame humidity, as we are newbies on wallpaper, but it shrank it seemed and had gaps between), and we had to paste the corners (likely more related to soapy water)

Since though, we have done three rooms - no problems since.
