Fishing License - where to purchase

Hubby is just not an on line kinda person. He also isn't much of a fisherman - he just likes to cast off the dock attached to the house. Meaning, of course, the chances of being actually caught by a warden is slim. But he is also superstitious. The years we don't get a license he doesn't catch a fish - when we do, he does. So he wants to get a license. Where can we purchase one in the buxton/hatteras area?

Go to Frisco Rod and Gun, Bob's Frisco Tackle , Red Drum in Buxton, Frank and Fran's in Avon. The clerk will print while you are waiting. I think they are around $32.00 for the year out of state.

Happy fishing!

You can also get one at any of the TW's in KH or Nags Head if you're coming in via the Wright Memorial Bridge.

Actually there is a good chance of you getting checked. My son( 17 at the time) was fishing off our dock in Frisco and the NC Marine fisheries police came by on a boat and wanted to see his licence. He stepped off the dock to get it in the house and the game warden screamed at him to not move and wait. Mom and I heard that and went outside to see what was up and they told us to not come out to the dock.
I was not impressed.
I suggest you go to Frank and Frans. Red Drum tackle, Dillons Corner, or Frisco Rod and Gun. you can get the 10 day licence or the annual if you plan on coming back

They are pretty spot on, even at private docks. When we had our little place on the Avon canal, they frequently made pass throughs in our area. We had licenses, and of course mine is always in my wallet in the house, but ya never know given the individual that inspects. I didn't keep my purse on the dock ever of course. I do always take my purse on the boat as I have "the kitchen sink in it." I totally understand the rules and reasons for licenses, but sometimes you run into someone with no common sense.

Sounds like the Marine Fisheries guys’ behavior was a bit over the top. However, I believe the requirements are that one needs to have the license on his person when engaging in the licensed activity. So the young man should not have had to go in the house to get it. That being said, the LEO’s needn’t be acting as if they had some dangerous criminal cornered.

We walked down with his wallet and showed them his fishing license. We both told him he needed to work on his attitude and find another job if a 17 y/o in shorts on a dock scared him.
He said he was sorry if he came off harsh and disrespectful.

As a Mom, if someone treated my teenaged son that way, I would have been livid. My son would have totally been over the top upset as he always follows all of the rules. No sense in that at all. I'm glad that the guy apologized. I'm sure your son was very upset. I hate that nonsense. It totally sets up a bad example of someone who is supposed to be professional. That was his home and he had the proper licensure.

It was a good experience for him IMO because it won't be his first encounter with an LEO that feels they need to act militant about everything. When I was a teenager my buddy and I were fishing and swimming from a local, single lane boat launch dock. They had some grassy area to fish from as well, but there were a lot of folks there with rods out already so we fished from the dock and took a dip when we were hot. This was not a very active dock and if a boat came to launch or land we would have moved out of the way. No boats came.

The warden came down and gave us a hard time. Not because anyone complained (this was before cell phones were a thing), but just because he felt like being a prick. He asked for licenses, hoping we would not have them I guess. We produced them. Then he gave us some long speech about how the dock was paid for by boat registrations, etc. yadda yadda yadda so... I pulled out my boat registration. Little did he know I owned a 12' jon boat with an electric motor and a trailer and the registration was on me. After that he kind of just mumbled that we need to give priority to boats if any show up and he left. Eff those power trip guys.

I have never been checked on the OBX, but rest assured if I don't have my license I'm sure it would happen. The most interesting check was 2 summers ago on the Mobjack Bay. Dad and I were kayaking and the warden came up to us on a jet ski. He was super cool though and gave us some tips based on where he's checked boats before that had coolers full of fish.

It is my understanding that in NC you are not required to have the license on your person. I had a run in with NC Wild life on Pea Island - power trip kinda of guy. He had to look mine up on his computer.

. He just wanted to quickly grab his licence and the warden quickly assumed he was trying to run away. I see both sides of the coin.

Last time I checked NC Wildlife didn't pay merchants anything for selling licenses. They had to rely on you buying merchandise from them to make it worthwhile. They're just using a computer and printer to facilitate you buying a license online.

Wow glad I posted. He will definitely be getting a license, whether or not he actually does any fishing. He tends to keep his in his tackle box - so if Warden McGruff happens upon him he will be prepared.

Sorry the fisheries guy had to be such a butt about it. I'd never been checked for a license (after how many times fishing over the years) until a month ago. Was on Core Banks (part of Cape Lookout Natl Seashore) and park rangers checked me twice on the same day, I had the license and they were pretty friendly.

There are no 'two sides to the coin' here. A boy was fishing from his dock and some a$$hole LEO decided to ramp the situation up before he even knew what was going on. He could have paused for 30 seconds and thought, ' you know what? I bet the kid is going to the house to grab it.'

But he didn't. He lost his cool and screamed at a child over something completely in consequential. You save behavior like that for real crimes, not fishng off a dock.

But, boot lickers will be bootlickers.

Everybody is a child of their parents. A 17-year-old is old enough to be a man, so let's call them that..

Fwiw, I have never had a saltwater permit on my body. Since 1972 I have always kept it in a baggie in my tackle box/bag. Heck, I can't even remember when they started charging people to fish.
I never have my Virginia fresh water permit on my body. It's always in my tackle bag on the boat or on the bank or the dock.

What's the worst that can happen if you play along with them? I will simply continue to follow my father's advice: do what they say and tell it to the judge or file a complaint later. He was a Virginis State Trooper when I was a kid. He said a bunch of troopers were self-important idiots, even back in the '50s and '60s.

I am a supporter of the police, and believe that the defund the police movement is one of the craziest things to come out of the left or anywhere else. However, our Constitution is a limiting document, and parts of it specifically limit the activities of the police just as it limits other parts of the government. Some people aspire to be cops for the wrong reason, to exercise authority over others. The same can be said for politicians. Others aspire to be cops for the right reason, to enforce the law. There are a lot of bad cops just as there are a lot of bad politicians. Videotape them with your phone every chance you get. And you can do this in any public place including inside public buildings, even in the police station or City Hall. Many law enforcement officers do not realize that filming them in any public place, including buildings, is constitutionally protected activity. But with the increasing numbers of first amendment auditors on the internet, more law enforcement officers are learning that this activity is constitutionally protected.
