Dog Parks

We have been coming down with our 2 dogs for the last 10 years. This year, we have a new rescue who is a puppy mill release and is a young golden retriever. He has been out of the mill for a few months and is nothing like other mill releases I have had – he is extremely happy and very friendly although has an incredible amount of energy and significant separation anxiety. We are working with the energy here at home in our fenced backyard and while we can take extra long walks, they cannot replace running around. Our vet discourages using the local dog parks as she has had to treat a number of dogs from dog fighting injuries, saying that she feels the owners often merely sit and chit chat among themselves and don’t supervise. I am wondering what other’s experiences have been with the OBX dog parks. We will be coming to Nags Head mid-May but could use any of the dog parks if one is better/safer than the others. TIA for replies.

Unless Hatteras Island has one that I don’t know about, there are four public dog parks on the Outer Banks. The most popular is the one in KDH directly across from First Flight High School on Veterans Dr. It has three different sections and there are almost always other dogs there. The one in Nags Head is OK, but I don’t like it because it is full of trees that the running dogs could easily run into. It is behind the bowling alley. Manteo has one directly in front of the animal shelter across from the aquarium. It is huge and has no trees. I have only been there one time. I have been going to Kitty Hawk dog park for years. It is my favorite because it is walking distance and because it is all sand, and sand is cleaner and safer for running dogs. Even if the ground is wet the sand will just brush right off of them and the dogs love it. Prime time is 9 o’clock in the morning and there are about six or eight locals that are there regularly. A good bunch of dogs who get rowdy and play hard but rarely are there any serious confrontations. It is located in Kitty Hawk Park across from the fire station.

Some of my fondest memories ever are taking my dog, EZ to KHDP. When he died, the regulars put up a memorial plaque for him.

EZ and Lizzie are the two black dogs that are lock lipped. They are actually playing tug-of-war with a tennis ball. EZ is the one with the thickest tail. Whenever Lizzie saw EZ she would grab the closest tennis ball and go stick it in his mouth and they would go into a marathon session. EZ’s main squeeze was actually Stella, the multicolored girl playing tug-of-war with Zoltan, the full blooded Vizsla, but Lizzie got to him first.

Thanks EZ! I Do appreciate the info and the video. They sure do look like they are having a blast! And it appears that there are some great friend owners that made the memorial for your Easy. My other dog is a chocolate lab but she is a little on the senior side so I'm not sure she'd be able to keep up with the ones playing.

Not super convenient but maybe head south over the Basnight and pull over on Pea Island...walk over to the beach and just let the Golden run...and run...and run smiley

No one for miles ;)

We have several dog parks and one is in Kitty Hawk off Kitty Hawk Rd. You will need to get a license for your dog to be at this dog park.

EZ came from a big-time breeder too. His dad was the one and only Garcia, the biggest baddest ass dog on all of Poor Ridge Road. Garcia was half German Shepherd and half Rottweiler. Known for staying in his yard and playing with his huge pile of toys during the daytime, at night he was a porch pirate stealing all the other dogs’ toys, and they dare not try to get them back. Garcia impregnated the next-door neighbor’s dog, a Blue Heeler mix, and out came EZ and a bunch of other full blooded Kitty Hawk Marsh Mutts.

Thanks again all. Ocean Blue - I think your idea is the best allowing him to run on the Pea Island beach. I'm sure he would Love that, although I think I'll wait until he matures a bit - while he has the separation anxiety, he's also a young guy and very easily distracted and I'd hate for him to chase a pelican all the way to Hatteras before he realized he was out of sight of us. Tim - your goldens are gorgeous!! Love your and EZ's stories of where your dogs came from! Hope to see/meet some of you at the park when we come!

Most OBX visitors arrive from the north, and that makes Kitty Hawk dog park a popular doggie rest stop. Just take the Woods Road shortcut on the right at the new 7-11 right after the bridge, and then after a left on Kitty Hawk Road it will be about one minute on your left. Tim posted a link that had the rules and procedures, but don’t worry about a permit to just let your dog pee on the way in. The combination lock mentioned in the rules lasted until the first senior citizen locked themselves in. Ain’t been locked in years. After that you can get your free permit in KDH.

Ya gotta be careful with letting them run off leash on Pea Island. Our good friends had their dog out there in the dead of winter in January and were stopped and harassed with their doggo. Another Barney Fife incident unfortunately. I mean...we have let our Bella off leash many a time in Avon and Frisco, and got lucky with no one citing us. We just got lucky.

Dog rules vary by town. It is my understanding that Kitty Hawk is the only town that allows dogs on the beach unleashed (sometimes). No matter where you are on the beach in Kitty Hawk, you are always close to the road, so this is not an ideal place to have an unleashed dog. Probably the best places in Kitty Hawk to have a dog on the beach unleashed are places like the Lillian Street access. There at least you have sand fences that will provide a barrier between your dog and the road, but these fences are not continuous and there are gaps.

That is so cute! I think all puppies are precious, but I have to say that golden puppies (I've never owned one) are the epitome of the beautiful pup.

We go right behind Mulligans...very few if any dogs there depending on the season...middle of Nags Head. We have had both great and scary dog park experiences so we tend to only use them when our 3 are the only pups. There is a water spigot and it's easy to get out if you'd rather sneak out when another owner shows up. Plus some of the best food and drink on the beach right there.
