Heading down Saturday to corolla. How's the fishing been. Just gonna be doing some surf fishing from the beach. Any bait working good this time of year.

In Nags Head the surf has been too rough in recent weeks to see if any mullet are moving around. Just before Labor Day there were loads of bait fish... glass minnows, etc. I didn't see any mullet at that time. I've picked up blues from the surf, but haven't hit it really hard. My neighbor has been picking up puppy drum at ramp 4. The drum bite has been on fire from the piers.

From the surf this evening at the north end of Pea Island. Caught on a hunk of fresh mullet and a drum rig. Needed a 6oz Sputnik to hold. Also caught a blue and my buds got blues (largest 26”), a small flounder, and a 25” drum. I didn’t have a tape measure handy for mine, but it’s up in the 40s.

Mstaszew: I have a question since you are in the know on all things fishing.

Can people still catch crabs in cages right now since the water is cooling a bit? We'd like to throw in our crab cage and I have some chicken legs in the freezer to lure them hopefully. I just don't know if it is too late in the season to even try. Thanks for any info!!

Can’t help you there, Bent. I don’t go for crabs. I have seen a few in the sound when fishing recently, some keepers for sure. The crabbers still have their traps out behind Lone Cedar as well so I assume they are still getting them.

Thanks! I wanted to try the cage again this trip. We'll go ahead and throw it in and see what happens. Have a great day!

I put the crab cage/pot into the sound and have caught a few little crabs, but they were too small and I shook them out. Put in new bait today and we'll see.

I have one monster blue crab in my crab pot and threw out a tiny this morning. I fed this one with more chicken today hoping he'll be happy and I can lure in some more! This is fun to do!

He is way over the five inch rule from point to point.

The last time we did a crab feast was in 1984 before kids and four couples in Kitty Hawk. Had two coolers full from Colington Harbor. Good times!

My mom and I were just talking last night about crabbing from the bridge going to Colington back in the day. It sure was fun. I don’t know how many we actually caught, but it seems like a million. We cooked them once on the beach at ramp 4. I enjoy the memories, but have no desire to pick crabs anymore. Fishing is more my speed these days and the path from catching to eating is much smoother.

Nice crab, Bent. We love them too and we're planning on picking some tomorrow with my son. I can't think of anything better to do on a Sunday afternoon. I hope you get a bunch more. Try some crushed clams for bait.

This morning, that same crab with the barnacles on his back was the only one in my crab pot. I let him go...kinda felt sorry for him. Just need more of them to take the time to actually make something out of it. I'll try it again in a couple of days.

Wow! That looks delicious! No, I didn't try again. The water on the sound is so grassy and high, I just didn't think the conditions were right! You always make the best food!!!!

Oh, ok. Grass will make your crab pots a big mess. And crab stock - you can't buy crab stock anywhere, so I have to make it.

That's one of the most epic pieces of fishing footage that exists. I believe the current video making waves was a recent release from footage he acquired over the past few months. It's an edit released by one of his sponsors. At least that's what it looks like because he has similar (the same?) footage on his Instagram account. Same clothes, shots of the drum and cobia, etc.

I believe he still holds the WR for speared sheepshead, too. There's a classic photo of him in front of TWs holding it. Click to follow link...

I wish I had the cajones to beach launch like that. When he returns to the shore... those waves are exactly why I wouldn't do it. I'd dump all of my gear in the ocean, guaranteed. I'd also need an ocean worthy yak. I use an Old Town Sportsman 120 PDL which is one of the most stable yaks you can get, but it's not a rocker hull and is not as good in large swell.

Everything my son landed was slot size. Just go out 55 and go down tot he end on the tides and it has been a great bite for the last few days.

All the slot drum you could catch for a few days last week up and down the whole beach. I didn't do any casting, but I did some beer drinking and observing and there was a highway of bunker as far as you could see right at the shore. The dolphins were feasting very close to the shore.

I am so itching to get back out there.

Such a cold brutal winter, even the Dogfish didn't hang around the Bay up here.

Went out fishing last weekend before the cold front came in. Was good to cast but I got only one nibble in 4 hours.

Was in Buxton last weekend, fishing around Cape Point and it was very slow. Did see one nice slot drum caught, but otherwise it was crickets.
