Salvo and Avon

Looking to head down in June and searching for a rental
We have stayed in Corolla (my personal favorite because all I care about is the beach and the beaches in Ocean Hill and Whalehead are so wide and you can walk for miles. Plus the OF views are amazing. We stayed in Kitty OF and enjoyed it. Have stayed in Frisco and loved the beach. Absolutely beautiful. Only thing we didnt care for was walking over the dunes (no walkway) was hard for the older members of our group. We stayed in South Nags Head and the house was beautiful (Joe Lamb) but the beach was just OK. We stayed in Rodanthe again the house was wonderful (and back about three Lots) but we did not like the beach and don't plan to rent there again. It was very narrow and the condemned houses sat in the water and you couldn't get around them very easily. There wasnt really anywhere to walk and the only time you could sit in the sand was low tide.

We are thinking of trying salvo or Avon this year. How do those beaches compare to Frisco and Corolla? Also I see alot of OF houses in Rodanthe advertised as having a wide beach in front. Are there parts of Rodanthe and Waves that have a wider stretch of beach?

North Avon for very wide beaches. The absolute best IMO. If....the houses are not already rented. I have a home in Frisco, but I think the North Avon homes and beach surpass everything on HI.

We were on ramp 34 in Avon last week fishing and this is a pic of the beginning of the North Avon homes. Nice set back from the beach with great views and wide beaches. We used to own a condo in North Avon across the street from the ocean front and marveled at the wide beach and dunes. Absolutely beautiful and assured to have a home with ocean views. If...they are not all taken at this point.

The ocean front houses in Avon are set back. Waaayyy back.

I hope these google maps links work.

Edit: Links didn't work. Click on the link below and then go to the "street view" points that are on top of the dunes.

From mid Pine Island to the south gate and fence where the 4X4 begins in Corolla, the beaches are unique; hard packed, flat, easy to walk and a very gradual slope in the water. Whalehead was our go to vacation spot until they moved or tore down all the houses to build new, bigger and better rentals that go for way more than I care to spend or divvy up with 30 relatives or friends. Not my idea of a laid back vacation. And the traffic heading to the northern beaches is no longer acceptable. It took us three hours to get to Nags head departing rom the 4X4 on a Saturday in July. Never again.

Rodanthe lost their beaches, Waves and Salvo nice but we only consider driving to the beach via access 25 & 27. Salvo has a series of triple dunes to navigate to a cliff like path down to the beach. Avon is kind of like Whalehead back in the 90's. Stayed on the northern part and planning a trip in June right across for the Food Lion where beach nourishment took place a few years back. We checked It out last summer and were pleased with the beach access for the 80 year olds in the party. Love Hatteras Village and Frisco too but only for the drive on beaches. HI is like Corolla use to be in the 80's and 90's and what we now prefer. But be warned, it's way different from Corolla.
