From mid Pine Island to the south gate and fence where the 4X4 begins in Corolla, the beaches are unique; hard packed, flat, easy to walk and a very gradual slope in the water. Whalehead was our go to vacation spot until they moved or tore down all the houses to build new, bigger and better rentals that go for way more than I care to spend or divvy up with 30 relatives or friends. Not my idea of a laid back vacation. And the traffic heading to the northern beaches is no longer acceptable. It took us three hours to get to Nags head departing rom the 4X4 on a Saturday in July. Never again.
Rodanthe lost their beaches, Waves and Salvo nice but we only consider driving to the beach via access 25 & 27. Salvo has a series of triple dunes to navigate to a cliff like path down to the beach. Avon is kind of like Whalehead back in the 90's. Stayed on the northern part and planning a trip in June right across for the Food Lion where beach nourishment took place a few years back. We checked It out last summer and were pleased with the beach access for the 80 year olds in the party. Love Hatteras Village and Frisco too but only for the drive on beaches. HI is like Corolla use to be in the 80's and 90's and what we now prefer. But be warned, it's way different from Corolla.
