Thirteen years ago today the Outer Banks lost an icon and a friend. Andy Griffith loved this place and gave generously of his time and resources in many ways.

Everyone knows Sheriff Andy Taylor, but Andy Griffith's acting career took off in the Outer Banks when he joined the cast of "The Lost Colony" in 1947, performing there for several summers until 1953.

Ran into him several times over the years. He would shop at Seamark that used to be up at the Walmart shopping center and was a fixture for lunch at Darrell's in Manteo. He was friendly but did not like to be interrupted during his meals but would gladly talk or sign autographs before or after. My wife saw him in Manteo furniture and jokingly asked if he liked the rocking chair she was looking at because he was undoubtedly the expert on a good porch rocker.

He lives on Pluto.

Hard to believe he’s been gone so long.

We were down to my mom’s home celebrating the 4th when I heard the news.
His home was kind of across the sound from my mom’s.
Wish I could have thanked him for the little medical clinic he had built near my parents’ house. It saved my dad’s life in 1997.

Bent, love Waitin’ On A Woman”
My dad had just died when it came out.
Cried my eyes out when I saw it.
So perfect!

I am so sorry...what a memory, dear!

Thank OB for it! Of course I cried when I heard it and saw Ange on the beach in white when he attached it today.

We saw that white suit at the Andy Griffith Museum in Mt Airy.
I wondered if there was still some sand in the shoes.

My oldest memory of Andy was when I was about five years old. This was before either his movie or his TV career. (1954). I’m sure most of you have heard it but for those who haven’t, this was very early in Andy’s career. Even before No Time for Sargents and A Face in the Crowd. Side B is Andy‘s take on Romeo and Juliet.

Andy would do his monologues at the Shrine Club in Whalebone Junction after his nightly performance as Sir Walter Raleigh at the Lost Colony. The Shrine Club is now the Roman Catholic Church. His last year at the Lost Colony drama was the summer of 1952.

"I believe I'll have another big orange."

It's been years since I heard that.

Thanks to an uncle, I listened to a lot of Jerry Clower as a kid. The first time I heard Andy's "football" I remember thinking that had to be where Jerry got his inspiration. Perhaps not so much the subject material, but the delivery.

You’re welcome and thank you for this thread saluting Andy Griffith. I hope it turns into a long thread because he is certainly worthy of being remembered and admired forever. I met him one time when I was 16 years old, but only long enough for a quick handshake and not a conversation. But I knew other people who knew him, and I’ll reflect on that.

ez, have you read John Railey’s book Andy Griffith’s Manteo : His Real Mayberry?
It’s fantastic. You can pick it up at Downtown Books in Manteo.
I highly recommend it!!

Nope. But I’ve seen Drisco Darling’s daughter, Charlene serenade Andy.

Andy graduated from UNC in 1949 (the year I was born) with a degree in music. What an amazing legend!

This is a pretty neat interview. He starts out talking about the Outer Banks and then at the end he plays the trombone.
