Have never tried to catch sandworms from the OBX surf ! Have checked internet as to know how ! But wondering if any OBX Connection members might have the best experiences and advice !!

Also, do local tackle shops/piers sell them live ? Have been using Berkeley product !!
THANKS

Are you referring to sand fleas?

Our first year ever visiting the Outer Banks we walked into a bait shop and asked for sandworms. The clerks response was "you must be from New England".

My understanding is that sandworms arent found that far south on the east coast and thus not carried in local bait shops.

Sandworms are a New England bait, dug up from tidal mud flats. You won't find them in NC.

Fresh bait like sand fleas, crab, clam, shrimp, minnows and cut fish can be caught or bought locally and will catch a variety of fish in the surf or sound. A D-shaped bait net and a bucket are all you need to catch your own.

Okay, been here permanently 30 years vacationed here starting in 1975 from Long Island. We used to bring Sandworms down. Worked well from boat and piers but honestly not as good a Bloodworms in Surf. Sandworms didn't seem to be as strong on the hook as the Bloods. Crazy story - Many, Many years ago there was a Maine Worm Diggers Strike and the Bait shops in NY were desperate for Worms. I took my Girlfriend out on LI sandbars to dig. Made a few $$$$$$$

I was going to say bloodworms work but Pickle got that covered.
We harvested worms one summer to see what we could get and whatever the bait shop is charging you for the worms is money well spent. That was some miserable work.

Pickle knows! Bloodworms are great but pricey! We went to Red Drum Thursday for bait and all they had was shrimp and my son is highly allergic so much so that he has to carry an epi-pen. Hubby said let's get it anyway and I said....well, we'll be driving him to the hospital in Nags Head. I shut that down fast! No way! Went across the street to another " Red Drum ' and bought what they call a mullet for $10.00. it worked for the small spot I guess.

Again - all of you - THANKS !! Every response makes me believe that this is the YEAR my biggest drum (and not a skate) !!!

Especially to Pickle - Just as I thought - you know everything about fishing the OBX surf and inshore/offshore !! If this was our initial contact 40 + years ago - we would have become regular clients !!!
