Is anyone doing any fishing?

Thinking about going down the 1st or 2nd week of October to do some fishing. Is anybody having any luck? Sound side or ocean?

I have been here for last 10 days and have only seen a few blue fish and small flounder caught in the surf at ramp 49 and 55. But I think things are getting ready to change. Yesterday at the end of Pole Road I noticed the birds hitting the surface and the mullet were being chased by what I suspect were small blues. I started a conversation with a fellow from western NC who was throwing a white grub unsuccessfully. He said one of his buddies had just caught a 16" Blue on cut bait. Of course I was without a rod as I was going for an evening walk and shell search with my handler.

Short version: the mullet are in running in the surf.

Jennettes has been crushing the drum over the past week. Yesterday while sitting at my desk eating lunch I pulled up the camera feed and was watching them land and release drum 3 at a time. Someone was on the landing net full time. It was insane. Feed link... Click to follow link...

I haven't gotten out since my return to Nags Head. It's been pretty windy since Sunday. I'm hoping to find a wee bit of a break this weekend to try for some flounder in the sound somewhere. It's looking like I'll need to hit some sheltered areas around the causeway.

I just pulled up the pier feed and as soon as the camera zoomed out to the end I saw a guy dropping a drum over the rail. Looks like the feeding frenzy is still ongoing.

I went on the Jennette's Pier feed last night and watched the excitement and the drop net lowered. I never saw the fish but there was activity on the end of the pier that indicated a big fish was hooked. Thanks for providing that link.
Meanwhile, I spent an hour either side of high tide yesterday at ramp 49 watching hundreds of fisher people catching nothing. It was a beautiful day, windy but sunny, and the water was nice. Yesterday evening I went to Ramp 55 and read a book while keeping an eye on a dozen or so fisher people casting big chunks of mullet with heavers....they looked like they knew what they were doing but I saw no catches....probably just practicing. I have not seen any mullet schools for the past two days. I have not been on the backside yet.

Yesterday afternoon a little south of Outer Banks Pier. I got it about 2 hours into fishing.

I first hooked one about 10 mins after arriving on the beach, but it got off about a minute into the fight. I was using some FAT cobs I netted at the fishing center and I think I had too large of a chunk on and there wasn't enough room in the gap of the hook to drive the point through fully. I had a few short strikes just prior to landing the one I got. There were also some blues nibbling the bait periodically. Surprisingly the grass was not a problem despite large chunks of it washing up on the beach everywhere.

How rough/clear is the water there? It's pretty churned up to the north. When I was in the surf yesterday there were quite a lot of mullet in the surf at your feet; however, the water was so churned up you couldn't see them unless you were on top of them. Tis the season for the mullet run and with this NE wind they're probably all pushed up into the surf thus all of the drum. I'm going to hit it again today I think. I just walked out and the wind is RIPPING. Flounder season seems to have passed me by without being able to get the yak out. I was thinking of trying the fishing center/inlet area and hugging the east shore today, but I'm not sure it will happen.

Slob size drum 49 down to 55 and the trout bite was amazing this AM both soundside Frisco and down at Hatteras inlet. My son and his friends limited out in 40 minutes on the rising tide this morning.

Any size to the trout? Stepdad and I fished Buxton soundside on Saturday and got some trout. Good eating size, but no whoppers. The largest was 18.5". We couldn't locate any drum, but my range was limited. The pedal drive on my yak locked up twice and didn't give me the warm and fuzzies to be going 2 miles offshore with that wind so I stayed in tighter to rt 12 fully prepared to have to paddle back.

Nice size, but can't be kept now unfortunately. We're going to need to pray for a few smaller fish in the mix going forward.
