The humble woolly bear is just as good - maybe even better than the sharp dressed weather guessers on the boob toob.

First, the color band chart...

And this is a woolly bear's coat in my driveway showing a mild winter for our region. I might as well sell the snowblower and shovels to some poor sucker Big grin

I was confused about the "woolly bear" ref. We always call them wooly worms in VA.

I googled the term and it's a locale thang.

I have heard that story about the woolies. And also about a lot of acorns. Did a home run slide recently in VA on my driveway walking over a ton of them....ouch!

The Live Oaks in Nags Head are dropping record amounts of acorns this year.

Hic-ree nuts, akernz, persimmins... all around heavy mast crop this year.

All the tree rats picking hickory nuts and husking them... sounds like it's raining. Especially as dad-gum dry as it is.

In Rowan county vernacular... "I seen" a werm of wooliness today. According to Greg's info-graphic, he was average.

We were in Gettysburg last weekend and I told my cousin that the woolyboogers were predicting a mid to mild winter. She laughed and said what is a woolybooger. I lived in South Central PA for 25 years and they always called them woolyboogers.

Windy today. Really windy. Lots of kindling in the yard. The best way to combat the chill is a warm fire. This is probably the cold start that my woolly bear predicted.

Ha! It's 30 degrees colder here, Stumpy. And the wind has been blowing 20-30 mph for 3 days now, gusting to 40. It was gusting to 50 yesterday so it's calming down. Big grin

Just jumped into an Uber in Chicago and killing time sitting in ridiculous traffic. 32 here. Was 40 in my hometown at 5 this morning on the way to the airport.

You're lucky, Stumpy!! Enjoy!

I have noticed an abundance of Nuts this year, always a sign of a harsh winter.
most of the wooly caterpillars I see have more dark hair in the front indicating a hast start and mild ending

Put another layer on and quit complaining Big grin

And MY woolly bear said a cold start (you need a local woolly bear for Roanoke).

You are absolutely correct on that one since winter has not officially begun. I shouldn't complain....left Chicago just in the "nick.". Egads!
