New sighting today

I saw something today I can't remember ever seeing before - here in Kitty Hawk at least. I saw a buzzard sitting on the peak of a house on the beach road about 10:30am. Then a few houses south I saw another one. I can't recall ever seeing a buzzard here and these were just sitting and looking.

Watch your little outdoor pets.

Buzzards aren't really birds of prey. Must have been something dead lying around.

It happens when you get old. They’ve been watching me for years. Sometimes they circle overhead and sometimes they just watch me from a perch.

This was my buzzard on ramp 49 this fall watching a fish head. Pretty annoying but he was hungry. Must have not found any good eats at EZ's pad.

First one I've ever seen on the beach. The seagulls really need to step up their game!

The little scavengers are protected under the MBTA. Next thing you know they'll be instituting a 1,000 Meter buffer area around vultures displaying nesting behavior...Dang buzzards, nature's vacuum cleaners.

A Turkey Vulture (Red Head) will not harm pets.

A Black Vulture may take a small dog or cat, although it would be rare.

Right now they are all migrating south to Florida for the Winter,

Or calves.

The article is from 2021, but I'll guess they've not stopped.

I can't recall seeing any near the beach before, either. Maybe the beach side just gets cleaned too well by other means, e.g. roadkill is removed, dead beach critters are eaten by other shore birds or washed away, etc.

They are common (about as common as anywhere else) on the sound side near the woods. I see them circling often in the area of First Flight schools, Run Hill, etc. That's where I play disc golf and I just assumed they were attracted to my rotten game.

I have been seeing them for a long time here in Nags Head, between the highways near Jockeys Ridge.

We have a huge contingent of Black Vultures that live at a local boat ramp. Theu constantly pull the rubber off you windhield wipers, rip window molding and damage tire sidewalls. I quit using that ramp during weekdays as there is not enough traffic in the parking lot to scare them away. Nasty creatures all the way around, truck covered in poop as well!
