I’m picking two upsets in the opening round. I’m going with Miami over Texas A&M and I am going with James Madison over Oregon.
Miami at Texas A&M
Texas A&M is the most over rated team in the entire nation and have been throughout the season. Their conference schedule could not have been easier. No conference team that they played except for Texas had a winning conference record and they got their butts kicked by Texas, who did not even make it to the playoffs.
Miami’s quarterback is Carson Beck. I’ve seen him play a lot because he is a transfer to Miami this year and for the past two years he was the starting quarterback for Georgia. 90% of the time he is an NFL caliber quarterback. But when he has his bad days, he can throw four interceptions in a game, which he has done on two occasions during his career, once this year against Louisville. I think he will be on for this game and that will be the difference.
JMU at Oregon
Oregon and JMU each have only one loss for the season.
Although Oregon lost only to Indiana, which is now the top rated and only undefeated team, they had a pretty easy schedule for a Big 10 team. They played neither Ohio State nor Michigan. They did beat Penn State in double overtime, who was ranked #3 at the time, but Penn State fizzled and ended up unranked and with a 6-6 overall and 3-6 conference record.
JMU lost only to Louisville during the time that Louisville was playing very well and was on their way to being 7-1, including a win over #2 Miami, and ranked as high as number 15 prior to their quarterback getting injured. JMU pretty much rolled over its conference foes during the season.
Tulane at Ole Miss
Tulane should not even be in the playoffs. Unlike James Madison they had two losses, and one of them was a 22 point loss to a team that had a 6-6 record (Texas – San Antonio). They are scheduled to play Ole Miss in the opening round of the playoffs. They lost to Ole Miss during the regular season by 35 points. What a joke for a team like Tulane to be ranked ahead of James Madison. Ole Miss’s only lost this season was to Georgia and they will clobber Tulane again.
Alabama at Oklahoma
Alabama‘s offense has been sputtering toward the end of the season. Oklahoma whipped them just a few weeks ago. They should do it again.
