What could I have done to have the water on the left show up a little better? I had the camera set to automatic (beach mode).

would you do anything different for this moon shot? Once again on automatic, but night time shot instead.

The pier image has a wide dynamic range making it a tough shot. If the water to the left were properly exposed the water under the pier would be to far underexposed. My suggestions are to turn off all the auto settings and manual spot meter on different areas of the water that give you an exposure compromise that you can work with. Or return to that scene when the light is less harsh. I'm thinking this would be a nice spot on an overcast day or at sunrise with the shadows of the pilings creating another set of repeated shapes.

Is that the Surf City pier on Topsail Island?

I really like this shot.

Given the same situation I would turn off all the auto settings, set the camera on manual, stop the lens down to something that would allow maybe a 10 second exposure. Keep in mind those are MY creative choices, I'm not being critical of yours. I think it's a cool shot, I like what you did with the composition.

thanks sg, I thought the foam could be a little clearer.

thanks, I'll have to mess with the settings some. I didn't really care if the water was real clear, just so that you could tell a little better that it was there.

I liked the motion in the foam. I suggested the longer exposure to add more motion.
