It is amazing about the growth. Currituck Beach Light Station is the same way. Pretty much all sand back in the 40s and look at it today. I know that when OBC, inc. restored it they planted a lot of things, but it was already very overgrown with trees, bushes and those damnit vines. From the looks of the gas stations in the pc, it seems Esso is doing all the business. Wonder what changed?

One of the reasons that there were no shrubs, etc back then is that the island was stripped pretty clean of it's vegetation at one point by grazing cattle and trees were cut for boat building. Sinvce the cattle haven't been around for many, many years now and boat building isn't a major island industry, the trees and vegetation have regrown. If the Esso station is the current location of Bill Ballance's (and I'm not 100% sure..I might be wrong) most of those guys were probably hanging out there talking racing and politics smiley

You are so right Renee! I had forgotten. I have a few inventories from the 1850s for the Etheridge family on Roanoke Island and it seems that Bodie Island is were a lot of Manteo folks kept cows. I remember reading that at one time there was some poaching going on. Hoi Toide's remark about Texaco lead me to believe it is gas offered there today and not Exxon. Is that right?

Oh sorry, didn't mean to be obtuse! The Texaco at some point moved to the Village entrance as one drives past Frisco. Isabel wiped it out. I'm like Renee...i think the Esso is in the same spot as today, just have a hard time getting my bearings. Maybe i'll ask the Texaco folks when & why the move, but that may open a can of worms?:smiley40:

This was the clubhouse of the former Gooseville Hunt Club...Donated to the Weather Service by the owners as Goose and Brant hunting went into decline (by their standards of high limits and low hunting pressure) IM:fish:
