Herbert Perry and the Mildred I at small marina beside the Washington Baum Bridge. The docks here were redone several years ago. They are on the Roanoke Island side of the bridge and Priate's Cove is across the highway.

Melodie, Your photo of Herbert Perry brings back memories. Herbert had a brother, Charlie; and both of them ran fishing charters out of Oregon Inlet at the time I was a young man in the 50's-60's. To me, in those days, Herbert and Charlie looked like twins. During the summer of '60 I worked at the Oregon Inlet Fishing Center and had the duty of getting "fishing parties" directed to the dock where their "already booked" captain was waiting for them on the boat. On one particular morning, I sent the wrong party to the wrong boat. I sent Herbert Perry off fishing with Charlie Perry's party. I caught he$$. Now, for the rest of the story. I was dating Charlie Perry's daughter at the exact same time. Needless to say, I caught he$$,again......More history, .., the father of the girl I later married (not Charlies daughter) ended up being the new Captain of Herbert's boat (Mildred I) after Herbert retired...go figure all that out...more history..Herbert's son, Lee Perry also ran a charter boat out of Oregon Inlet. His daughter, Mildred (Foreman) would later own Foreman's Cottages (still there) on the beach road in Kitty Hawk. Another daughter, Lessie (Mann) would own the Sea Spray Motel in Nags Head (now torn down)....and there's more...than most would want to read...

Thank you so much for posting your memories. This is the very thing I hoped these photos would do. I had the utmost pleasure to meet Mildred at her home. What a sweet woman! I could not remember what she told me about the cottages she owned, but you have now cleared that up. I need to carry a voice recorder with me! Please post more memories. Do you have any photo? I have lots more old Oregon Inlet photos with Delton Dowdy and Lee Perry and of course, more Perry photos. This is a wonderful book! Click to follow link...

ahhh, Melodie, the memories...don't know how much family history we should quote on these boards.. smiley You mentioned Lee Perry...ahh...I really liked Lee Perry....He was the Captain of the fishing charter boat, Deepwater...Like my father, Lee had cateracts in his older years. Those were the days before the lens implants (like I now have). So, you had glasses that looked like the ends of soda pop bottles. I'll never forget the day Lee came sailing into the fishing after a day's fishing..and, just as he entered the harbor...he struck something on the bottom...I don't remember what it was...but, the boat sank right there in the opening of the harbor. They got it pumped out and repaired. Then, there was Milton Perry, another Kitty Hawker, who was the Captain of Karen Alton.. His son, Gary, is now a Kitty Hawk councilman. And, I forgot...Charlie Perry's son (Charles) is, today, a world re-nowned charter boat captain/fisherman, who fishes all around the world. Back to the Sea Spray Motel. It was located just south of the old Mann's Recreation Center, later the Foosball Palace/Atlantis area. The Sea Spray was actually two different motels, separated by an open breezeway. One portion of the motel was owned by Mildred (Perry) and Dick Mann and the other portion was owned by a couple from Hertford, NC. Everyone thought it was one business...

Perhaps you should write your own book.
