Great pic! It once had the distinction of being the Nation's smallest PO. Then...someone decided to set it on fire. I think this was moved to a former postmaster's yard? Someone know the history on this?

That was the first post card i recall sending to a friend in NYC to say that i had made the move to the OB safely from a short stint in NYC. Straining the brain trying to remember some "history." Seems like there was something about the USPS employee being a woman & odd hours maybe. Or like closed on ?Wednesday?

Can't remember the year, we started going to Hatteras in 1970. I do remember something about it being set on fire, how awful!

CSCAPE, I noted on your picture that they had replaced the cement block steps. This picture is from 1966. If you look close there are boards leading up to the office in the sand and there is a bicycle laying down in the sand between the telephone poles.

We have always staying in the RWS area and we have a pic of my sister, brother and myself from the late 70's or early 80's standing on the front steps of the post office. My mom bugged us for years to get back on those steps for another pic and in August 2006, we did. Here is the pic from 2006. I will have to see if I have the old one and scan it in to see how different it is! Lorie

Great picture Lori...it would be great to have them side by side. You should always listen to your mom when she wants to get pictures like these!!!! Great memories, I'll bet!

I loved that little Post Office, but never took any pics of it. Thanks for posting them for a trip down memory lane . . .

I concur!! There was an article on the Chicamacomico Lifesaving Station repair post lightning strike. Believe it was in the OB Sentinel & it sounds like after raising all the funds & having a center beam ?replaced? they are ready to OPEN...YAAY!!Click to follow link...:smiley1:
