Unfortunately my remaining shots from 1966 and 1971 are of our family jumping from the top of Jockey's Ridge. In 1966 and 1971 there was a pretty sharp drop off and with a running start you could jump out about 6-10ft and drop another 6-8ft. Needless to say you had to shake the sand out of your bathing suit after landing.

but the food was an afterthought. It was a place to drink. Saved my old vac for almost a year, until we went to our yearly vacation, but learned the place closed just before we left to come down. Had a great spot all picked out for it.

Went round to the coffee shop to use their zippy rig & ID the photo gallery. Wowie...Chris & Bob, the original owners in the funny 1st shot of them barefoot w/ the big hat. Bob went on to eventually start Rundown Cafe. Dave & Monica, Samir, JD, Missy, Russell, Mark, Lou, Leon, Gordon, Mike & Dave G. Some familar faces whose names i am terrible with. The pretty blond who worked there & the hair stylist guy...can't wait for more! Good Times.:smiley48:

And its fun to look at Chris' interior design flair. He's so funny, the PINK "booth seat" that he placed up on a high platform was a fave of mine. In summer my legs would get stuck to it. Looking over all the old flyers, menus..."Crack Kills" always cracked me up...lol. Has anyone told Marvelous Moondance about the site yet?

Salvo-my place of employment was one block over & they were all v. good friends of mine. So they would come to my bar for "wine & cheese" & small talk & then our group from the restaurant would migrate over to their bar later after work for a brew & some great tunes, great friends, great times. As for Robert's comment regarding the food being an afterthought...that is not really correct. Chris & Bob, the original owners are long time chefs on the OB. As i mentioned, Bob went on to Rundown Cafe which receives v. nice reviews here. Yes it was a "hang out" just as MANY others are on the OB. I am aware that visitors would patronize the joint & thought it was prone to excess...i feel this is more a case of the locals blowing off some steam, IMO.:smiley1:

Hoi....my comment about the food being an aftertought was not meant to infere that the food was not good.......I was referring about the folks that frequented the establishment thinking that.

but when the word "grub" is used I tend to think of a truck stop or perhaps primitive camping. Robert i've been wondering what "Saved my old vac" is exactly & how that relates to "a great spot picked out for it." I'm sorry that its hard for me to follow the meaning.

I thought the guy in the hat (Bob) looked familiar. I know I know him on a friend basis, but many many years not seeing him has made me forget. I know him not from Mexeconos but from somewhere else. I think we worked together somewhere at one time. Very nice guy. I recognized Big Bob (worked with him too) in the crowd shots and a friend of mine Laura and her husband. I am going to let her know about this site. She will love it! Thanks again HT for posting this. Marvelous Moondance will love this!

Probably a bad choice of words on my part but grub to us in these parts is akin to bar food......definately not fine dining. With that said you can have excellent grub, decent grub, not bad grub or downright nasty grub. OK on to part two.....maybe I am mixing places up (I am getting up in the years, a child of the 60s) but was not the Mex-Econo known for the vacuum clearners on the walls/ceiling? That is what I was referring to in my post.

Bob & his g/f Linda & Mike & i all lived together up by Anderson's my first fall season. Bob is incredibly nice, as is Chris. The Laura you refer to, does she sing perchance? I think Laura is the name of the pretty blond who worked there. When you say "Big Bob" are we talking about Bouncing Bob?

I'm pretty sure a friend of mine Rick Cambell AKA Shorty was a bouncer there. He is around 6'8 and 300 lbs from Richmond Va. He lived on the bypass and drove a old jeep.

Why yes indeedy, Shorty checked in around 6'9" so says Mr. 6'4". Fridays & Saturdays were generally the only nights bouncers were required & that was b/c of the occasional Cheeser gettin a paycheck & feeling like wrassling. This is not exclusive to this particular restaurant & i'm not trying to pick on anyone, facts are facts. Apparently MORE pics have been added today...back to the coffee shop for me tomorrow!! Stay tuned.:smiley44:

Last night one of the reunion folks called me to discuss dates for the shindig next year. Can anyone tell us when Virginia schools end classes in June of 2009? Working around kids & high season is getting kinda hard...:smiley16: And a shout out to Marcus, Vicki & Peyton in the pics, I was not in attendance for the 2 weeks worth of "the last night" closing parties in 1994 that are featured in the crowd shots. A web designer in Plano, TX has been holding the v. old pics hostage for many years now.
