Jennette's Pier RIP

If you have any Jennette's pier memorabilia or photos, let's see them. Sometime during the 90s a couple was managing the pier. They use to eat in Sam and Omie's a lot while the remodel was going on. Any-who...the pier was remodeled and the restaurant totally redone. The dining room was odd. They had put in these tiny windows almost like port holes. With a fantastic view like that, why such small windows was my first thought. Show off that terrific view for all its worth. Here is a 1997 story from the Pilot that talks about the new restaurant. Thanks Sandie Toes! So glad that you and others have been enjoying these photo memories. I think history, photos, stories, etc. is meant to be shared and not squirreled away. We all have something to contribute that's for sure. So what's in your attic!:smiley40:

Melody, I agree it should be shared. Thank goodness you have what you do! I constantly tell my grandmother to write down her stories. Some are doozies!!!lol My husbands grandmother was the same way, no pictures but great stories. She passed away last year and I wish we knew more...

Erin...I just bought my mom a hand-held recorder. She tells great stories, but I forget them if it is not written down. We have yet to sit down and record, but we will very soon. Get your GM one and help her with it. The oral history in her own voice will be priceless. The recorder I got can plug into my laptop so I can digitize her stories. They are not terribly expensive. My mom and I lament about not getting her mother's stories down at all. If you have an IPod, there is a microphone attachment for it that a third party sells. I have one and it does pretty good quality on the voice. Time goes so quickly...

Don't put it off.. My Grandmother told us so many stories.. You know they actually washed clothes on a scrub board, over a wood fire , in a large black kettle? Man!!!! Anyway, we were going to write them down, and she passed very quickly before we did so.. She was 91. That was 2 and 1/2 years ago, and I find myself trying to remember them all. And when I need to ask her a question about "way back then" she isn't here to ask...Please do it now !!!!!!!!!

Good morning beachjoy2. Most of Jennette's pier was taken out by Hurricane Isabel in 2003. The state decided to demolish the rest of it and rebuild it as a concrete peir in the same location. Here is a link to an article about it before it was torn down: Click to follow link...

Over at windows Live Local, you can go into Bird's Eye View and see the remnants of it when the pictures where taken. Also, check out how much of the beach has eroded since the pictures were taken that roanokeis posted.

Wow roanokeis, those are great pics. What year were those taken about? Do you have shots of today where the Pier was? Is it totally gone?

Jennette's pier was built in 1939 and the cars look to be from late 30s or early 40s. Yes...the pier is gone, but will be rebuilt.

We love Winter, when you aren't tripping over folks... I wish I could have taken more but my batteries were dying. I had to put the camera in my pocket, to warm it up, after every shot.

wow, the beach has eroded alot. You can especially tell in the second photo in comparison to the virtual earth view. Was that mainly because of Isabelle?
