that's what we say when we are headed down south Hatteras way. Here are a few postcards I have scanned this morning. More to come... The first one is Atlantic View Hotel. The last one is a street scene in Hatteras

Keep them coming! Love the Hatteras shot of the Texaco and Esso filling stations. Am I correct in assuming that is Rt 12 between them?

To get our bearings on the Esso/Exxon which we believe is still in the same location. It appears to be Hwy. 12 & i think the angle is looking toward The Slash. I did put in a call to a Texaco friend b/c that is the part thats got me even more confused. The spot where it is in the photo would be N of or kinda near the cemetary, i think.

Is the TExaco the original "Old Station" that the Midgetts owned and is now the site of Midgett Realty..near the cemetary.

Midgett Realty? is across from Hatteras Harbor Motel? I get realty's mixed up. I keep wanting to say that further down or W in the pic would eventually be where Nedo's is now...but something doesn't seem right when you take the cemetary & the beautiful old home next to it into account. A trip is definetly in order!!

The first time we went to the Outer Banks we tent camped at Hatteras Sands Campground back in 1978 (Now called Hatteras Camping Resort) Yes, I said tent camping and that is how we did it until after 1982! We always were lucky enough to get one of the few sites that had a tree near the canal. I remember one evening we were sitting at the picnic table and a crab grabbed onto my BIL toe!:smiley40: Another year we were staying by a group of guys and one of them was a GYN doctor from Richmond. It was the first time I ever saw a window air conditioner hooked up and attached to a canvas tent. They were a nice bunch of guys and err doctor. In 1979 we had to pack up and headed for Roanoke Rapids to wait out heavy rain and flooding from hurricane David. We were with a group of about 25 friends and we went to sleep early and got up around 4 AM and it was very windy and starting to rain. We got everything packed up quickly and tried to wake everyone who was passed out from drinking and partying the night before. I could hear them laughing when we went to sleep about us hitting the sack early:smiley46: Yep, laughing and joking because they didn't believe us when we tired to tell them about David coming!!! We went around and was trying to wake everyone up after we packed up but by very quickly it was pouring. Our little 1977 orange VW had water halfway up the tires when we left. Many spots of 12 were flooding but we made it through. The crew were left and fend for themselves and who got the last laugh:roflmao:

1. Hatteras Marlin Motel

This is where my mom and dad took me from the time I was 1 until I was 17. Wow, that was a big trip down memory lane...THANK YOU!!

After I turned 17, I started going with my boyfriend's (my husband now) family and we stayed in Buxton at Cape Woods campground. Now my husband and I take our kids to Frisco Woods campground. But the Hatteras Marlin is where it all started for me and is where my love of the Outer Banks blossomed.

Thank you again roanokeis, that was really neat seeing that photo :roseanim:

Been busy at the Outer Banks History Center lately. Found some great shots. From the National Park Service collection. Cows grazing by lighthouse no date given. (guessing 1930s) Hatteras Holiday Marinia (guessing 1970s) Is this really Hatteras???? It is tagged that at the history center. Hatteras Waterfront (guessing 1940s)

That 2nd pic you can see The Slash by what we would call The Channel Bass Restaurant area in the upper L hand corner, an old family home after coming round the bend after Burrus Red & White & i can't get over how much sand/beach there is where the boats are docked. The 3rd pic...i wonder if that is the beginning of Oden's Dock? Texaco sign. Thanks Roanokeis, v. kind of you when its mid JULY!! :smiley1:

Hey, i planted "sea grass" like that before but the clumps were NOT as healthy & huge. Had to use a piece of rebar to move the sand over enough to insert the root deeply for growth. Its cool to drive by the house in SS to this day & think "Wow, that yard looks nice." The pic of the lighthouse w/ keepers station & quarters reminds me that my friends mom was the last keepers child born in the lighthouse quarters 60+ years ago. Black & white is nice & so is Roanokeis!! Thanks for the memories.

Thank you! Nice shots of my favorite places smileyBTW..in that shot you were wondering about...I recognize Burrus Motor Court, the Channel Bass, Sonny's, The Viallge Marina- the main part of where you see boats is what is now Teach's Lair. And yes, Hoi..look at all that soundfront! Some things have changed alot. Some things are still exactly the same smiley

Renee- in pic #2, did you notice ALL that bulkheading where the sand/beach is on the sound by the marina? Do you have any sort of opinion as to what effect the bulkheading MAY have had on the lack of that "land" area now? Not trying to get anybody riled up, but pics like this CAN sometimes be clues as to what happens when you try to fool with Mother Nature.

I noticed all that bulkheading. I suppose that hurricanes have wiped it out over the years. There is stil some at the campground IIRC. I'm sure that making a hard barrier like that would have had some effect.

Good question! The Lighthouse Service electrified the lighthouse in 1934. Wonder how far those wires had to go to bring the service in.
