Put 2 new films up on youtube recently that I added a soundtrack and sound clips to. That was fun! They were shot on Roanoke Island in 1934 during the Homecoming Celebration held in August. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yBKHGT0Rjk4 Roanoke Island hosted a Homecoming celebration every year staring in the 20s and it would last all week. Thousands would attend and this little island would come alive. Back in those days, people had not really built houses and businesses on the beach front (until the 30s) and mainly lived on the soundside in Nags Head or Roanoke Island as well as Kitty Hawk bay. Manteo was the main hub of business and commerce for the county. Here is an excerpt from an interesting article first published in 1926: "Roanoke Island Ready for its Noted Visitors", The Independent (Elizabeth City, N.C.), 13 August 1926 Text from Microform News-Article ROANOKE ISLAND READY FOR ITS NOTED VISITORS Over Six Thousand People Expected to Visit Spot Where Many National Notables Will Gather August 18 Home Coming To Last An Entire Week By D.V. Meekins Everything is in readiness for the crowds who will set pail, beginning Monday, and continuing thru the week to attend the Dare County Home coming the principal event of which will lie the celebration of the birthday of Virginia Dare on Wednesday, August 1st beginning at 11:30 o'clock and lasting an hour and a half before luncheon begins. Thanks Salvo. Really I am lucky 'cause someone out there gave me the films in digital form. Someone from the Creef family (Pioneer Theater owners) in 1934 put all that together and filmed it. That was a huge undertaking! I just added music and sound clips. Sadly there was a fire in 1939 that wiped out all that you see in the film except for the Pioneer, courthouse, bank of Manteo, Fort Raleigh Hotel and the Orange Crush bottling barn (which was a ways from the fire). The fire of '39 started at the gas tanks at the M.L. Daniels store along the waterfront (so I was told) and quickly spread. All the buildings along the waterfront and surrounding area were wooden. Townsfolk were able to save the courthouse and the bank. They got all the mail out of the post office before it burned down.
