We might've run into one another right there way back then. I was 7 years old, just a few years older than what I assume to be your son in that picture?

My parents took me to all that stuff every year starting in '72 until we ended up at a Grey's Point Campground permanent site on the Rapp up in VA. around 1977 or so.

Keep 'em comin', HOF!

hooked- that's the "sunken garden," right? It looked a bit different, i think, in the 80s/90s. As in more sunken...

Thats it, I had another pic of it taken in the same place several years later but I can't find it. I think later it had a lot more shrubs around it.

If i recall correctly there are 4 sets of steps going down into the "sunken gardens." N, S, E & W. Yes, there are more plantings & more mature growth, but sumpin w/ the flat aspect in your pic is bothering me. Hmmm, maybe they "redid" it?

I bet Melody could solve this. I know the date is right because Aug. 1972 is written on the back of the pic and it says Elizabethian gardens. It is my first wifes writing and she wrote that our daughter was 15 months old.

I went to the site and got this pic. From what they say it was always more to it so some construction must have been going on because the sloted wall was not there either.

I believe that's a different fountain (in the first pic), at the gatehouse entrance, not the one in the sunken garden. :smiley1:

Thanks for bringing this one back to life Mermaid Tears! My Mom was going through her travel purchases & found an old postcard of the Sunken Garden from a reely long time ago, but its not dated. It IS an aerial though!! Darn I sure wish i could scan this thing, drats. Anywho, the aerial shows the neatly trimmed hedges...like in Mermaid's pic, the slotted rail around the fountain & the FOUNTAIN is the one w/ the figure on top & plantings at the feet of the figure. I'm wondering if Mermaid's is up & out of the Sunken Garden on the E side stair area. My postcard cuts off just prior to a "landing" area there. I do recall when we got married there that the Garden employees had all guests come through that entrance. It may be the fountain in question?
