I've been out researching the old Nags Head area and was wondering if anyone had a picture of Carolista's building? The round one.
Also, right behind where that building was are two cottages and maybe a boat house or something like that. Does anyone know anything about these? Are they old? Boy! They look old. I would like to know something about them.

Those were great photos on there but what I really wanted was just one photo of the Carolista Jewelry store. I tried to buy Vintage Outer Banks by Sarah Downing but it is unavailable and I know the photo is in there. This is just for my own memory jog because I don't remember what it looked like.

I have the book, and scanned the picture you want, but will I break copyright laws if I post it?!!

When I paint now I always use my own photo which is a limiting factor but better safe than sorry.

As related to me, as long as U give credit to the registered trademark (original copyrighter) and it's not used for commercial purposes U would be fine...However U must desist if asked...After a certain amount of time it can become public domain....As related to me :smiley40:

Just to keep the record straight, I merely mentioned that photo was in the book and that I was looking for the book. I just wondered if someone had another one that wasn't copyrighted that we could have on the message board. Things get a little confusing here sometimes. I wasn't looking for a scan of the photo in the book. No way, amigos.

I will try and answer best I can...Carolista was my mother and the buildings behind the shop were all OLD...these buildings were all moved to this spot when they were being torn down...they all had historical significance. The building behind the jewelry store we called the party house...it was a building set-up for parties...no bathroom, no bedroom, just an open area with deck surrounding the building. I believe the full name was the Arlington Party House. There were a total of 5 historically significant buildings excluding the jewelry shop. I can't remember what we called all the buildings now but if I think about it, I will post again.

Thanks for reviving this old post to answer my question. I have the book I was looking for and quite a few others by now. A few of those old cottages that were part of the Carolista group are still there behind what is now Mission Thrift. There is an old boat in front, right next to Surfside Plaza that I am really fascinated with. Most people just drive right past it, since it has sort of merged with the landscape. And another one in what was the parking lot, overturned. I suppose that one is what is left of the one in Updegrave's photo.

The largest of those buildings and the farthest north was originally on the First Colony Inn property across from Austins Seafood. For about ten years beginning in 1970 it housed the First Colony Gallery which later became the Yellowhouse Gallery in another location. The building was moved to Carolista's property sometime after a fish truck lost its brakes at Austin's and rolled across the street and knocked it off its foundation. The words "First Colony Gallery" are still visible on the back of the building.
