Unless you get invited to Sal's there is little chance of getting good Italian food on the Outer Banks

Jolly Roger has great Italian food and the portions are huge. Enough to share or take home for lunch a few days later.

good luck with Italian on the Banks.
perhaps growing up in a strong Italian community has prejudiced my view, but if we want Italian when there, we cook it. (and i'm not Italian.....Welsh/British/German)

They seem to have the best I've had in the Outer Banks. Although, we are Italian so we usually cook up a couple pasta meals at the house while we're there.

Nicoletta's up in Corolla Light Town Center used to be pretty good - but it's now Bambinos (heard it's owned by the same folks who own Cosmos) - haven't tried it yet, but probably will in September.

Ish may know if it's any good!

I cooked a nice pasta meal for Mellie and our guests yesterday. Gemelli pasta with baby clams, andoullie and zuchinni in a white wine, garlic and butter sauce. Some nice bread and a bottle of wine. Hey, those were the ingredients that were in my fridge and pantry so I winged it just like I do with all my meals. It was delicious!! Best place for Italian? Maybe some scampi tonight!!

This recipe that Robert provided a link to is fantastic - I add some halved grape tomatoes to it about 5 minutes before I take it off the burner.

Pasta con Finocchietto Selvatico e Salsiccia
Penne with Wild Fennel and Sausage
1/4 pound (115 grams) wild fennel fronds, leaves and slim, tender stems only
3/4 pound (350 grams) fresh sweet or hot Italian sausage or Fresh Homemade Fennel Sausage Calabrian Style
1/4 cup (60 milliliters) extra virgin olive oil
Kosher salt
1 pound (450 grams) penne rigate or rigatoni

Wash the fronds well in hot water as they can harbor small insects. Bring 5 quarts (5 liters) of water to a boil in an 8-quart (8-liter) pot over high heat. Add the fronds and boil 10 minutes, then lift them out of the water and into a colander, reserving the water to cook the pasta. Drain the fronds well and finely mince. You should have 1/2 to 2/3 cup minced greens.

Remove the sausage from its casing. Break the sausage into small clumps with a table knife.

Heat the olive oil in a 10-inch (25-centimeter) skillet over moderately high heat. Add the sausage and cook until it is no longer pink and begins to brown lightly. Stir constantly with a wooden spoon, breaking up the clumps into smaller bits. Add the fennel greens and stir well to distribute them and coat them with the oil. Season with salt. Reduce the heat and keep warm.

Add 1/4 cup (35 grams) salt to the water in which you cooked the fennel. Return to a boil and add the pasta. Cook until al dente. Set aside 1 cup (250 milliliters) of the pasta water, then drain the pasta and return it to the skillet with the sausage and fennel greens. Cook, stirring, over moderate heat for a minute or two to flavor the pasta, moistening it with some of the reserved pasta water. Serve immediately.

Serves 6

And don't forget to add some good shredded or shaved Grana Padano cheese!

I would have to agree with Mike since Sal himself has said there is not great Italian on the Outer Banks and Sal is a good cook. We never eat Italian on the Outer Banks because being from New Jersey we get some of the best.

Jstangl mentioned Nicoletta's.....we ate there twice many, many years ago when friends wanted to go.....not bad. Don't know if same after probably 15 years or so ago.

Jolly Roger has had Italian dishes on the menu for 30 years. Good portions and decent food. Italian Restaurant NO! La Doce Vita is new (a few months). It has taken over the restaurant in the Elizabethan Inn. I saw the menu, looked basically Italian, Veal and Chicken dishes looked awfully cheap, around $13/$14 (w/salad and angel hair). However, the few American Dishes were on the high side Ribeye $20, Tuna and Flounder $20. Pizza (16") from $10 to $23, most around $19. In recent years, this location has had various owners and names, I hope they last. Good Luck, worth a try.

If you want Italian go to NY or NJ. OBX is a better place to get a seafood platter than a plate of pasta. And, I agree with you wholeheartedly pizza is not ....well, you know!
