After back surgery in May 2011, gained a bunch o'weight, lost a lot o'muscle. After 3 months of (literally) baby steps getting back on my feet, started PT and soonafter regular gym visits to rebuild core. At no point did anyone primary physician, surgeon, PT discuss anything about weight and nutrition impacting speed and quality of my rehab.
It wasn't until I decided on my own to start losing weight and eating better until I realized the obvious connection between carrying less weight around and having my back, legs, etc. under less stress. Once I started changes, I began to burn weight quicker, workouts improved, stamina, etc.
All that said, I hit a wall about a month ago and recently went to a GNC store and talked to the owner about dietary supplements to make sure I'm getting enough "good stuff" and also looked at things to help burn weight more efficiently. I can honestly say that now, at age 45, I feel better than I have since I was in my 20's.
Still have a long way to go, but my hat off to anybody making exercise, diet, and nutrition changes in their life at any point, young or old.
