I've searched OBHC and found some good pics of old Nag's Head Soundside-any more out there that you could post and can anyone tell me why they built houses/boarding houses/hotels? on pilings out in the water? I've heard it was "cooler" or to avoid the migrating dunes that covered one or more of the old hotels? Can anyone add anything?

Easier to tie your boat up, when everything and everyone was transported by boat.

I'm assuming that the original warf would have been an extention of the straight part of West Soundside Road. Andthe boardwalk that was built from sound to oceanwas the original/Soundside Road. Do you know where the hotels were located and which ones? I've got pictures of one of them extended over the edge of the water but not sure where. I spoke with the owner of the house on pilings in the waterStinson's Ranchthat was rebuilt after Hurricane Irene. He said at one timethere was a street and two rows of houses in front of him. So I guess the water has encroached on both the sound and ocean side. So perhaps the land isn't even there any more. Any ideas where I might find more soundside pics of this area? I've already canvased OBX History Center. Thank you.

Have you found Outer Banks Vintage Scrapbook on Facebook? Just pictures from various people's experiences of Outer Banks past. Not all the pics are as old as you are looking for, so you might have to dig a bit.

There are also a few pics of the soundside in the Nags Head walking tour book, but those are probably from the History Center.
