Most of the larger running related events that you hear about on the OBX are the result of the non-profit group OBSE (Outer Banks Sporting Events). OBSE organizes and manages the 4 main events (OBX Marathon, Flying Pirate Half Marathon, Storm the Beach Obstacle, and OBX Triathlon).
The effort has been a tremendous success with participation growing each year. Last year the events raised $100,000 for the Dare Education Foundation and the Outer Banks Relief Foundation, not the mention the boost to the local economy the races bring.
I figure most people have heard of the fall marathon, but the other races have gained in popularity as well. We just did the triathlon and it was an absolute blast (basically sold out with over 1000 participants despite the cruddy Sunday weather). Given the weather variability and traffic, these races are not trivial to pull off, but they do an awesome job. My wife has been doing the running races for a couple of years now.
Check out their website. I know this forum isn't exactly a hub of aerobic exercise devotee's but I'm sure they're a few of you out there. It's a great excuse to make an extra off season trip to the island and work on the body maintenance at the same time.
Also a nice article in the Voice on Jim Snyder, who has been responsible for growing these events over the last several years. Cheers! Click to follow link...
