When I was a kid in the 70s, my family vacationed in Nags Head, and we always stayed in the same motel. My parents can't recall the name now. There was a hardware store nearby, run by a guy who went by the name Smitty, and his wife. I believe they had a granddaughter named Holly, who I played with whenever we visited. I believe they lived above their store. My folks also draw a blank on the exact name of the store, so I thought

Same with me and my folks. The motel we had stayed in is long, long gone but I have many wonderful memories from there. It was also in Nags head and it was called "The Beachcomber". Just a small motel right next to a giant high-rise with a seahorse on the wall.

Yes, SandyClaws, I remember it as well as a 70's kid! The store you're thinking of was Virginia Dare Hardware, and was right next to Wink's market. (They were the closest thing we had to a Lowe's and Harris Teeter back then!) The location is actually Kitty Hawk, not Nags Head, but both are still standing. The old hardware store (which was run by Smitty and Elizabeth Smith) is now the Ocean Blvd Bistro and Martini Bar. Go for dinner sometime, I'm sure you'll recognize it. Not sure if the motel you remember is still nearby but you'll be in the right neighborhood.

Still is. They renovated it a few years ago and it is super cute. Same with the Tar Heel, both of them I think are in Nags Head
