Anybody here ever ride 12S? Contemplating riding the length of Hatteras, possibly including Ocracoke too. Would love to hear some experiences, and thoughts about the safety and logistics of such a ride.

This time of the year... I would not do it. Too many people doing everything else behind the wheel other than driving.
I know this will bring out the debate again but you can be doing everything right and one fool rolls down the road... and you will pay for it the rest of your life.

Hatteras Island cured me of bicycle riding. Oregon Inlet bridge is insane, there is no shoulder to much of the road, add in the new temporary bridge and the very narrow 3 mile section of road building, too many motor homes, trailers, and boats being towed, and ESPECIALLY the worst drivers in the world going much to fast and paying attention to everything other than what is in front of them on the highway. I am amazed that we dont have bikers injured every day during the tourist season.

I have been living in Salvo for about a year now and make frequent trips to Avon and Buxton every week. I would neither run or bike anywhere near Route 12, any time of the year. The phone calls in the car are one thing, but the smart phone texting / web surfing is out of control. I see it every day and it is increasing..

I just passed an accident in Rodanthe about an hour ago.. Not to provide information that is not 100% verified but the evidence appeared to be a Car hitting a bike.. The Car windshield was smashed and the bike severely damaged... 4 State troopers were on the scene.

Please be careful out there. There are a lot of people on the island right now... Stay safe...

I used to ride 12 regularly - before there were any shoulders anywhere on the road. It was insane but just another insane thing I did and somehow survived. Perhaps my saving grace was that I usually visit in the off seasons so the traffic was not as intense.

It may be one of the worst places ever for biking. The venue is beautiful but with tourists checking out the scenery and generally focused on everything other than the road if you like life I would leave the bike at home. I'm saying that as someone who did a couple thousand miles a year on road in the Philly suburbs for quite a few years. Don't risk it!

I road in the late off-season way back in the day on Route 12 leaving from Avon and heading north. This was late 80s time frame and it wasn't any worse than anywhere else I've ridden. I'd agree that drivers are more distracted these days and I'd probably not do it again. Sure would be nice to have a sidewalk-sized path, well off the road - the length of the island.

Was out running near Rt 12 in the Tri Villages this morning.. I run on side roads but had to cross over 12 a few times. I would put the drivers on their Iphones not even looking at the road at 2 in 10..

It is bad and getting worse.. Stay safe...

We had a long time renter in our house get run over by a drunk driver at 1 in the afternoon on a tuesday on RT12. He spent 4 months in the hospital and was 10 months after that before he could go back to work as a crop duster.
I was always impressed he did such dangerous work and ended up almost getting killed when he took a vacation from it.

My brother is fond of rides. Once he had a 12S 5200mAh single motor, just over an hour of ride time. He has a good experience of group riding and all this stuff. As far I know the safety tool to be included are first-aid kit, common tools, a cell phone, air pump, tubeless tire patch kit, duct tape and some ‘baling’ or safety wire, at a minimum. A small fire extinguisher, emergency blankets, wholesale sunglasses you can order from www.citysunglass.com, bottled water, energy bars, and two-way radios are excellent to have on hand in an emergency. The sweep rider is usually the rider who will need these items first. On longer and larger rides often a maintenance trailer will follow the group and support any motorcycles that may have a disabling mechanical problem during the ride.

Stick to walking the beaches....It's safer. Unless, of course, you fall into a previously dug hole or run into a skeleton of a shade tent.

I would never ride on 12.....
