The Curious Case of the Piping Plover

I know this Boston Globe article has been seen here before, but it's been awhile, and worth a re-read.

"Twenty-five years after Massachusetts started shutting down entire beaches to protect the tiny shorebirds, they’re still struggling to survive. But as one unlikely success story shows, maybe the best way to save them is to stop worrying so much."

At CHNSRA it's not about the birds or the turtles. The closures are punitive.

MAN THE BUNKERS!!! Fortyfish and bobbyg sez the NPS is out to punish all who want to use CHNS.

Word on the street is that there are secret wire transfers of billions of bucks from environmental groups to NPS coffers so that they can celebrate the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service.

Where do we find the petition to demand local, state and federal investigation on this matter?

Don't go to any grocery store on the Outer Banks expecting to find milk, bottled water or toilet paper because It will be bought and/or looted and safely stored in the bunker. Wink smiley

Not to worry bobbyg I am just trying to destroy my credibility with each and every post on each and every thread ... love ya man In love

Back on topic, I believe the point of the article is that excessive closures are less effective than just letting people go about their recreation while coexisting with the birds. But then, some folks may not have the mental focus to read something with that many words. After all, it is a long article.

yeah, back on topic ... Sooooooo I guess your point is you believe that the closures at CHNS are excessive and the NPS should let "people go about their recreation while coexisting with the birds" (you didn't include the threatened and endangered sea turtles in your remarks) I do not know the scope of time in your visits to CHNS; however during your visit didn't you notice that people and "birds" under the FEIS are coexisting at CHNS?

I stand guilty of not reading your link; however I did have the "mental focus" to read the CHNS NPS DEIS and FEIS and I am sure you did also rite?

Click to follow link...

Your thought of "the best way to save them is to stop worrying so much" does not float with me. It is because we did stop worrying that created the species of the piping plover to become threatened yes?

I thought Bluejay's synopsis of the thrust of the article was spot on.

Has it escaped readers' attention that one mentioned community, Plymouth, budgets for $ 310,000 for ~ 2500 elderly people (that's approximately 124 per person) and allots $ 245,000 for ~40 plovers (that's approximately 6,142 per plover).....I'm not quite sure how anybody can defend that discrepancy of dollars spent.

sooooooooooooooo using your analogy we can say that the cost of replacing the Bonner bridge which is about 216 million dollars vs the entire population of Dare County which is approx 34,000 one cannot be "quite sure how anybody can defend that discrepancy of dollars spent." who sez you can't make numbers say what you want them to say for whatever purpose you want them to? Laughing smiley AND the piping plover does have to worry about the Bonner to get across Oregon Inlet ... Big grin

It was not an analogy dennis, it was a community expense for one group (senior citizens) vs another community expense for another group (plovers). Did you read the article?
And I don't care how you cut it, or toss in the bridge rebuild to your "analogy", there is something just not right with a community center that feeds the elderly vs a community that pays almost 50x as much on a bird.

Sorry, when you said: I'm not quite sure how anybody can defend that discrepancy of dollars spent." and provided comparisons, I assumed you were making an comparison which IMO makes it an acceptable definition of anology.

naw, I did not read the article and went by the tone of Bluejays post. It is my belief that we have enough local issues down here in the Outer Banks to be concerned about such as beach nourishment, the Bonner bridge replacement, the constant movement of sand along the Outer Banks and if I want to know about piping plovers at CHNS I can find oodles of information without having to depend on the Boston Globe Magazine. Soooooo I do not find it relevant your "put in whatever word you want here" of what is "not right" up there in Boston.

Most certainly there are other issues, in CHNSRA and in Boston.
The article was relevant because it focused on the restrictive closures for the plovers and went on to illustrate that the plover population was thriving in an area that was not so strictly regulated.

But...
You haven't read the article, and this will be my last word with You on a topic that you won't even enlighten yourself of. Maybe we can talk about the space time continuum or quantum physics on equal grounds because I'm fairly certain neither of us have read on about those topics.

There ya go, beating a dead horse. The NPS will be reviewing the management plan at CHNS and "restrictive closures" ... whatever that means, will continue to ensure their protection. Perhaps you may want to consider enlightening yourself with local Outer Banks issues such as Oregon Inlet shoaling, Ferry passage routes between HI and Ocracoke shoaling, Bonner Bridge replacement, beach nourishment, overwash on NC12 all of which can be discussed; however your expertise of the piping plover situation by the Boston Globe Magazine not being discussed by you will not leave me sleepless.

I was just quoting the article (hence the quotation marks).

I do not know the scope of time in your visits to CHNS...

Well then, let me fill you in. I've stayed on Hatteras Island (Avon, Buxton, Frisco, Hatteras) in the months of February, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, and November, since 1962. My first trip to the island was via ferry. How about you?

I stand guilty of not reading your link; however I did have the "mental focus" to read the CHNS NPS DEIS and FEIS and I am sure you did also rite?

I believe you meant "right." And yes, I have read them; that's how I know I have a problem with them.

It is because we did stop worrying that created the species of the piping plover to become threatened yes?

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.

Your words: Back on topic, I believe the point of the article is that excessive closures are less effective than just letting people go about their recreation while coexisting with the birds. But then, some folks may not have the mental focus to read something with that many words. After all, it is a long article. ... end of your words

I do not see any quotation marks in the above message when you originally posted it, do you? sooooooo again I am assuming that is YOUR opinion that closures are excessive at CHNS, yes?

Sooooooooooo thanks for filling me in on all those months you list as a visitor at CHNS. Were those visits in the same year or did they consist of a week or two each year? Sometime it is not what someone sez, it is what someone doesn't say, yes?

naw, I meant "rite" and if wanting to nitpick on my grammer makes ya feel better, then go for it. If you read the DEIS and the FEIS I would imagine that from your post: "just letting people go about their recreation while coexisting with the birds." you want the ORV management plan at CHNS scrapped. If you indeed did read up on ORV management at CHNS, ya gotta know that:

"Executive Order 11644 of 1972, amended by Executive Order 11989 of 1977, requires certain federal agencies permitting ORV use on agency lands to publish regulations designating specific trails and areas for this use. Title 36, section 4.10 of the Code of Federal Regulations implements the executive orders by providing that routes and areas designated for off-road vehicle use shall be promulgated as special regulations. Section 4.10 also provides that the designation of routes and areas shall comply with E.O. 11644 and with section 1.5 of Title 36 of the Code of Federal Regulations."

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm "I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you" ... IMO ya aren't doing such a swell job of explaining it to me, but I am trying to do my best to understand ... words like "excessive closures" and "coexisting with birds" are but buzz words that folks like you throw around, but really do not explain anything.

OH what a silly question ... The question has squat to do with any issues, ya know sorta of like what goes on up in Boston vs. CHNS. If ya gotta count just how many times you have been to HI ya just don't have the right sight picture, yes?

I can tell you that the last time I went to HI was last Sat. I know it does not count with your stats, but on the way to Rodanthe we stopped at the PINWR visiors center to chat with Pat Moore for an hour or so. They have a bench inside the VC where one can relax and enjoy and you should try that. We wanted to check on the status of the dunes around the checkerboard bridge and the S curves. Since it is South of the VC at PINWR does the South Pond count? We happened to stop there to see the White Pelicans.

About a week or so before that we drove to CHNS to walk around the Hatteras lighthouse and view the video of the Ranger walking up the lighthouse ... I think that was the one, but we have viewed so many there I am not sure, soooooooooooo please do not hold that against me. Since December is not one of the months u listed as visiting the Outer Banks, I can assure it is beautiful and worth doing.

I guess you want to make it contest, but I have never counted any of my visits to CHNS or trips below the Bonner and never thought it necessary to do so, but apparently that is a big deal with you.

I can tell you that since the implementation of a mandatory ORV management plan was put into effect I can still enjoy all the benefits of CHNS and for those of you who want to whine and complain about ORV use try your vacation elsewhere.

I know you are just dying to let us all know just how many times you have visited below the PINWR visitors center soooooooooooooo have at it and while you are at it let us all know just how many places and times you have visited above the PINWR VC ... ya know like Pea Island, Bodie Island, Ft. Raleigh, Alligator River NWR, FWS Gateway visitors center, Wright Bros. Natl Mem and other attractions on the Outer Banks.
