Cahoon's was the very first place I shopped in the OBX back when we stayed in SNH back in the mis 80s. I still have a sweat shirt from there. It was/is a great place....just about anything you need you can find there. Good to see that these kinds of places are still around!

I LOVE that place - you can run in for milk, a t-shirt or just a lime! They have EVERYTHING!

A couple of years ago, we sent my nephew to Cahoons to pick up some stuff for breakfast. His wife forgot to tell him something and called down there. She told them to look for the guy with the sausage and flour when he comes to the counter. Sure enough when he walked up there they gave him what we needed. He had this look on his face and they said "Your the sausage gravy guy and your wife called for you to also pick up butter" Don't know of any other place that would be that hospitable.

Not to take anything away from Calhoon's which sounds like a neat place, but that kind of thing goes on all the time here. I think it is an island thing or just a small town thing. People are frequently calling the convenience store that I work for looking for their husband or work companion. They leave messages and mail for each other. We have also had tourists call and ask us to find the "sausage" guy and ask him to add such and such to his list. We try to find them and tell him about the addition to their shopping list. The behavior that I especially like concerns UPS or some other delivery service. If they deliver something to the wrong business, it is just a given that the business will deliver it to the correct person/shop. I have seen often. I think this atmosphere of helping others is what I love most about living here.

You're absolutely right beach girl, It's common place around here. I've even shown all the UPS drivers where my spare key to my house is so they can leave a package inside the front door in case the weather is threatening. It's a shame that now I have to lock my doors, never did the first eighteen years in this house, or in any other place I lived down here. But things are changing around here a bit.
Cahoons is great, but I could easily name a dozen other places that would do the same and are great too.

It's nice to hear of all the places down there that add personal touches to their businesses. Sure wish it was like that in the rest of the world. People always ask me why I would like to relocate to OBX and this is just one of the millions of reasons. Alot of people think that locals are only courteous because it's their bread and butter, but after listening to you all I think it's just a life style that comes from good upbringing and the pleasure of being lucky enough to live in such a wonderful place.
