Ok, I need help. I want to get a new digital camera and I need some advice. Who makes a good reliable digital camera for under $400? I know there are a lot of skilled photographers on the board so maybe you can help me make a wise decision. Thanks.

I'm not that versed in digital cameras, but I have an Olympus D-360 L that I've had for a few years and the pictures have come out as good as cameras that cost twice as much. It will hold about 36 pictures between downloads and you can purchase extra cards to hold more. I don't know if you've seen the pictures I've posted, but most of them came from that camera. I still use my 35mm quite a bit for those pictures I want to be just so, but the digital works great for everything else.
Decide what kind of features you want and then go to a site like cnet.com and compare the prices and reviews for the ones you like. There are a lot of reviews on that site which can be very helpful.
Good Luck!

I researched 3 months before I bought a digital camera. I started out thinking about $400, but ended up paying much more. Don't think you can go wrong with a Canon, Nikon or Sony.

You have to decide first what you want to do with your digital camera. Semi-serious photography or just "snapshots" What size photo will you want to print....if 8X10 you will need at a bare minimum 3.0 megapixels. Need a long zoom?....you will pay more for that. Etc. Etc.

Go to the linked site below to help you find out what you really should be looking for. Then copy and paste the other sites below for reviews of cameras. The sites are excellent.

I bought a Nikon Coolpix 3100 (look at Kimcos site with the flowers) for $230 on-line and with shipping it came to about $250.

As soon as I learn how to use it I'll let you know if I can take pictures as well as Kimco can with hers LOL.

Robert did you get the 6.3 MP Cannon Rebel? I have heard great things about that camera. If the price comes down a little more I'm going to buy one. The pictures are incredible.

Hi Stering,

At the time I bought, about 15 months ago, SLR digitals were only made by Nikon I believe and they were in the thousands of dollars. So they were out of the question for the time being.

So I bought the then, top of the line Canon, a PowerShot G2. This camera is considered a "prosumer" level. It has 4.0 MP, a great lens (down to F2), 2272X1704 maximum resolution. I have loved this camera. although still use my old trusty Minolta SLR film for "serious" photographs.

The camera you mentioned is exactly what I was looking for. I too have heard good things about it already. Although it is high ($900 body only MSRP)it will come down soon. It will probably be my next camera and my G2 handed down to my daughter.

Well after reading HOURS online, consumer reports, and lots of research I have just ordered the Canon Powershot A80. It is a great little camera with really high ratings. Very affordable. You can find ratings and information everywhere on the internet. Staples even has a special right now on the camera for $399.98 with an extra CompactFlash Card, and a nice little accesories kit. You can't go wrong with a camera like that. PLus that fits right into your budget with my 2 cents worth to spare!

Enjoy shopping around.
