Interesting.

You do know where the Mason-Dixon line crosses to the Atlantic, of course.

40% of the State's budget for Welfare would be a bargain today in the Republik of New Jersey.

It is not any news to me. You can look all this stuff up to verify. Here is a good source of info:

- Slavery was first legalized in Mass in 1641 and not legally abolished there until the end of the Civil War in 1865.
- All colonies had slavery as a legal institution at some time in their history
- The slave trade was eventually dominated out of New England. The first slave trade ship was built and launched out of Mass.
- Other dates of legalizing slavery:
- VA 1st slaves sold in 1619
- CT 1650
- MD 1663
- NY 1664
- NJ 1664
- SC 1691 (Slave codes)
- PA 1700
- RI 1715
- GA 1738
- Not sure of exact dates on the other colonies

It might also be germane to know the statistics and percentages of slaves held in the mid 1800s.

Census figures from 1860
Based on these figures, the northern states certainly abolished slavery earlier than did the south.

Yes, NJ along with most states in the east were "guilty" but only until a point in time well before the Civil War when they (including the Garden State) became a free state. But what is your point in starting this conversation anyway?

This may have come about to address some of the self-righteous comments made over the flag controversy. It actually is timely as Obama will be seeking reparations next year - he thinks we should pay for the sins of past generations of Dutch, American, African, slave traders and their customers. I actually thought we have been doing that since the 1960s. We've subsidized many of the poor descendents of slaves until they are damned near back in slavery.
This forum may be the wrong one for the conversation but get ready for our twice elected half black president to say we must pay for our negative racial sentiments, real or perceived, .... that might exist in a tiny per centage of the population. He has proven the most devisive leader we have ever seen.
Anyway, I think that the OP just wanted to point out that slavery was far and wide beyond the American South and, in fact, is still rampant among the Muslims.

Opinion, Obama doesn't hold a candle to W.

"Especially tell it to Bush, who holds six of the top 10 spots on Gallup's "most polarizing presidents" list. It's calculated by the annual difference between a president's approval in his own party and the opposition party. Ranked by the size of the gap, Bush is Nos. 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, and 10. Obama holds slots 4 and 6, while Clinton and Ronald Reagan are ranked 7th and 9th, respectively."

I don't give a damn what source you sight .... no president in my 65 years has ever been as prejudice as Obama. Of course he is the first Muslim POTUS we have had! Johnson hated blacks but he knew how to buy their votes. This guy hates anyone who has been successful, (unless extorting money from them) thus the wealth redistribution campaign.
He is reprehensible in any color and unfortunately has blown a great opportunity to be a unifying figure. Very few of my left wing friends can defend the guy and even previous devout supporters are admitting he is inept and way over his head.

And that is the problem.

Not a big fan of Obama either but I'll take him 5 to 1 over W.

He is mostly just the wrong color and from the wrong party for the majority of the "haters" IMO.

Or more accurately put, he has caused more harm and done more damage to this great country. He has caused more division and moved race relations back 30 yrs. Of course all the blind lemmings will rush to defend him because he is of color and from a certain party or a certain religion.

Well SO once again your opinion is wrong. He is not my party but neither were Kennedy, Clinton or Truman and I have no doubt that they were all trying to do what they thought was best for the country. The fact that Obama is sorta black gives him the best opportunity of any president we have had to heal race relationships but he has chosen to do the opposite.
I'm not sure what anybody else would have done if in Ws position when our country was attacked and 3000 Americans were killed by savages but I do find the Monday morning quarterbacks very amusing. God help us if we are attacked with this guy at the helm ... he wouldn't know who to blame! If you are so left that you actually think he is doing a good job then there is, indeed, no use discussing his bleak performance.

And the fact that he is "the wrong color" is the ONLY reason he got elected twice! May also be why he has been given a complete pass by the press.

Squid, My opinion isn't wrong just decidedly different than yours. Obama is not liberal enough for me, Berrine Sanders is more to my liking.
History will be much more favorite to Obama than your opinion of him, yawn just more right wing rhetoric.

Just what is the wrong color and who decided it was the wrong color? And while I'm asking, how do you known why people voted the way they did?

Sea Oat is the one that said he was the wrong color. I said his color was the only reason he was elected. I may be wrong ... It was a combo of his color and his eloquent speaking fashion. Sure as hell had nothing to do with qualifications or management experience. Please don't claim that community organizer is experience enough to be POTUS. He is the affirmative action student, Congressman and prez and the best agrument possible against that policy.

Oh come on Squid don't tell me you have not heard someone talk about Obama and not throw in some disparaging remarks about his race, I have heard him described more than once a the n@'&€¥% president. It is fairly obvious that his race is one of the big negatives with certain groups. And it is obvious that you are part of that group that also views Obama failing because of the color or his skin. There is no reason to discus his race in any context as it pertains to job performance unless...

"And the fact that he is "the wrong color" is the ONLY reason he got elected twice! May also be why he has been given a complete pass by the press." biggest squid

And I didn't say he was the wrong color I said some people find him inept because he is of color. I don't think his color has anything to do with his performance as president.

I completely agree. He is inept, inadequate, inattentive, disagreeable and dismissive, and surrounds himself with people equally or more inept, inadequate, inattentive, disagreebale and dismissive than he.

But, Hey - this is a Local Issues Forum. I should be flagged. USA Flag

You can't bait me SO, I don't care about the color of his skin or anyone else's for that matter. You're the one that started down that road and, typical of a liberal, wish to make a racial issue out of one that doesn't exist.
There are plenty of people of color who would do a better job then debummer!
The slaves, captured and sold by blacks, traded by the Dutch and freed 150 years ago have nothing to do with anybody or anything in 2015. Your POTUS will seek reparations before he is done.
