Whereas NC recognizes concealed carry permits from about 38 other states, the permittee must abide by NC laws. I did not know that if you are stopped by a NC LEO you must disclose that you are in possession of a weapon...not like that in VA. It is probably good for out of state CCW holders to brush up on NC law. Just passing this info on.

Hubby has a Pa permit but rarely carries unless he is either delivering eviction notice or going hunting or fishing. We were stopped in Virginia on 270 recently and the police officer saw his permit when he was getting his license out of his wallet. The officer was quick to ask if my husband was armed. The answer was "no" but that didn't help we still got a speeding ticket.

I also have a Pa permit and I carry more often than I don't. It is always good practice to announce you have a permit and are carrying as quickly as you are able no matter what state you are in. LEOs get very upset if they find it on their own.

Always good to brush up on the carry laws in states you are traveling through in advance of every trip. I always do because laws change. While not an official reference, this site will give a good overview and pointers to states' laws.

This is the first year ever I thought of carrying on my trip to the OBX, in fact the thinking is over so this thread caught my eye. Thank you.

Sad state of affairs, I likely won't on person carry at points A and B of the trip, just the line in between. And yes I would announce the permit and weapon if I am stopped by LEO. Sometimes common sense makes it to law and the sensible have no issues with complying. I am more Pro LE than I have ever been in my life, I have always had great repsect, now I find myself pulling for them out there, they are on edge and rightfully so.

It is when the law and/or citizen lack common sense that we run into trouble.

Honestly, I feel the OBX is a "safe" area, but I also know that no community is immune from thugs or drug-crazed individuals who will rob/attack/harm anyone for any unknown reason. There is also an element of danger when traveling...many travel I-95 late at night and a mechanical breakdown can be very unnerving and dangerous. To me, it is logical to be armed in your vacation home, just as many (if not most)people here in the South are armed in their personal residence. And let's hope all weapons are properly secured from access by children.

In 1988 I had a shotgun leveled on me and my buddy by a very drunk gent on the beach in Salvo. I did some comforting of this very disturbed fellow and the standoff ended up in an arm wrestling match rather than a shooting. It was touch and go for awhile but you never know where or when you may encounter a disturbed person.

Whether or not you choose to own or carry a firearm is a personal decision that each must evaluate and do what is right for himself/herself. I personally have been confronted by an armed, crazed person at point blank range, apprehended someone breaking into my mother's house while she was home alone and terrified, and had my own house broken into while my teen-age son hid in a closet. I was raised in an era when nearly every home had a double-barreled shotgun behind the bedroom door and one hanging in a rack on the living room wall. This goes back to the days of the early settlers of our country. A sign used to hang on the wall at FDNY's Station 84 that read "Tonight could be the Night". So true.

Agree with the statement about reviewing rules before you travel. I always carry where permitted by law. If stopped regardless of where I am, I always identify myself as having a cwp. I will also tell them where I am carrying or where the weapon is if not on my person. I was stopped this year on way home from OBX. When I handed my liscense to Trooper , told him I am carrying at the 4 'oclock position and I have one in the trunk in a piece of luggage. Troooper thanked me for telling him. Trooper then asked why 2 with me. Told him one is comfortable for driving long distances but only holds 6, like the other one better for all around carry, but on long trips it gets uncomfortable. He chuckled and said good thinking.
