All the surf and pier report what was caught during the day. Does anybody do any night fishing? I like to go from evening til 10:30 or so depending on the bite.

Night fishing tends to produce skates, rays and small sharks, in that order. But about an hour before sunset until about a half hour after sunset can be awesome right behind the breakers with mullet, croakers and blues on baited hooks. Keep a casting rod with a Gotcha or spoon on it nearby too.

In October, you can find a lot of local guys fishing at night on the very end of the piers for the big drum. Use 10'+ heavers and spot heads for bait. Some of them roll all night long. Some nights have a lot of action, slow other nights. It can get rather chilly out there some nights.

You'll be there in prime time, especially in October for the large ones. They like rough water, up close in the surf. They are exceptionally strong fighters. A 30" drum on light tackle feels like you've hooked a John Deere.

Judy is 100% right about the light. If you are driving on the beach, don't cast your headlamps over the water. You will spook them.

The drum crown is a tight group especially on the serious fishing piers (Avon and Rodanthe) Ask them for help and they will be happy to work with you.

Major Drum fishing in Hatteras at night in Fall. Mostly night. Some more Northern Piers will have smaller Drum action at night. Generally very good Trout just before dark.
