are you using it whole or as cut bait?
I'm not a fan of pin fish for bait but mullet is great. If they are alive I will hook them in the tail. ,dead I chunk them and hook through the skin. or the finger mullet can be hooked through the lip or behind the head if used whole

Live small Pinfish are a hot Trout bait right now. Behind the head and some people cut a fin so there swimming is limited. Live Finger Mullet are always deadly Flounder bait in the OI area.

Simple answer... YES! Very much depends on the presentation. Most people fish mullet on a flounder rig or knocker rig of some sort. And you're moving this rig typically, so you want the mullet hooked in the mouth. If you tail hook him and drag him he will die very quickly. Same for a pinfish... you want to rig the same way. If you are just going to toss your pin out and leave him on the bottom a lot of guys will hook them in the belly. I tend to hook them in the back in front of the dorsal.

Second the Pinfish Back. However you may want to clip the Dorsal fin or half the tail.
