Someone mentioned whales in another thread and it reminded me of a topic I've been wanting to bring up.

Whale watching.

Is it worthwhile off the OBX? Any particular time of year? Is the boat ride fun enough even if you don't see any?

My wife and I did a dolphin watch this past year and it was a lot of fun and we saw at least 100 dolphins (including a 1 week old infant). So, how 'bout whales?

Can you expand on that. I didn't have the opportunity to chat last night, but just like Ace I am too curious as whether or not there are whale watching trips on the Outer Banks and when they generally migrate to warmer waters.

there aren't any whale watching trips that I know of Ace. I see them from the beach every fall/winter. They come in real close to shore, within 100 yards or so at times.

I am not seadog...she's my buddy....dont know about obx whale watch, but my late wife and I went on a whale watch off Plymouth, Mass, and it was utterly fantastic..we must have seen at least 50 whales off all sorts jumping while feeding....got some great video...the captain admitted that the day we were there was unusual...what a break for us...seadog may know more about whale watch off hatteras, but i doubt it....you could check at teach's lair or hatteras landing....

I went on a whale watch in California. The first sight of a whale breeching was so amazing it's hard to believe they can propel their bodies like that out of the water.

Do you think they'll be offshore in mid December? I'd go to the beach to see if I can se some.
